| My Yorkie constantly smells yet he's bathed frequently! Please help. My Yorkie has over the last few months developed an unpleasant smell. He has dental issues and his mouth is horrid but he himself smells bad. We wash him every few weeks and he's groomed 4-5 times per year. I'm not sure what's going on but now I'm thinking it's a health condition. I did some research and saw that yeast infections and skin infections are common causes of smelly dogs. Anyone else experience this? We have hardwood floors and I feel like the smell is getting deep in it. I wash the floor constantly, light candles and it always smells bad! I'm going to put a call into the vet to see what she says. It it's driving my family crazy that is always smells really bad. |

| You need to get a dental and take care of those teeth! They can cause issues with organs and the heart and everything.

| Yes this ! AND those rotten teeth can also make his body stink to high heaven as dogs lick themselves spreading all that stinky bad bacteria all over his body. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If his mouth is "horrid", why isn't he getting dental care...?! I don't know if you've ever personally had any dental pain, but if you haven't - it's *extremely* painful. PLEASE get this poor baby the dental care that is clearly needed . It should not be neglected - it's not fair to him and it's cruel if he is in pain, which is likely if the smell is horrid. As far as body smells, the vet should assess / test for a yeast infection and seborrhea, as well as other skin conditions. Are there any areas of red patches or anything...?

| A dental here costs upwards of $1500 and I just had a death in the family so money is extremely tight. I also worry about anesthesia. I know I need to do it. The vet doesn't think he's in pain he just had lots of tartar and bad breath. I think I'll ask the vet to quote out a dental for me again and see what tests can be done for the skin conditions. He constantly locks his paws but he's done that when he wakes up since he was a puppy. I did notice a pimple like bump on his back the other day but he doesn't itch. His ears look clean, no yeasty smell from his paws. Not sure what it is! |

| My daughters rehomed yorkie had terrible teeth and she smelled awful. She had a lot of teeth removed and cleaned up what was remaining and the dog no longer smells! It was the licking spreading the stink all over herself. She shopped around and found a clinic that did it for $500. |

YT 500 Club Member | Oh yes, horrid teeth, horrible smell, not just mouth but everywhere. Please schedule a cleaning, of course, with a Yorkie everything is expensive. Everyone needs to research their breed of choice for information concerning health issues and the amount of money that can add up quickly. Yes, money is tight for all of us but decrease as much expensives as possible to get him help.

| How old is he? What does he eat? Those two things don't really matter, but both could matter. Yes, I agree that bad teeth really can make the smell seem to come out of their pores. Some foods can really make them smell bad, and liking paws is sometimes a sign of allergies (maybe food?) Bad teeth can cause organ damage, so that bloodwork is going to be really important no matter his age, probably more so if he is a senior. Have you considered applying for care credit? It is a credit card that has promotional 0% interest if paid in 12 months. Quick search will get you there. Talk to the vet, and maybe just start with the bloodwork. Sorry for your loss as well. Good luck! |

The paw licking is very likely due to allergies - this is the cardinal sign of allergies in dogs bc the histamine reaction occurs in their paws, making them very irritated feeling...so dogs lick/chew them for relief. It's most likely enviro allergies (pollens, dust, mites, etc). More about allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Been a while since I posted but I finally scheduled a dental for my little guy. He is 7 and in fairly good health. He's a little overweight. I spoke with the vet yesterday as he had some bloodwork done in August as he was having some belly issues. She said his cholesterol is s little high and I think his potassium was a little low, but overall everything looked pretty normal. So my little guy has stinky stinky fishy smelling breath and he lost s tooth on his own playing with a toy about 2 years ago. At that time his vet suggested a cleaning Bc the teeth most likely have a lot of buildup. I'm concerned about the anesthesia and his recovery will be. I've heard that some dogs lose their personality, some lose all their teeth. I don't want my little buddy to change. He's a big ball of fun. His mouth smells bad but he himself doesn't smell. I don't know if he's licking the floors and then when we wash them the smell from the mouth coupled with cleaning solutions makes it worse? Hoping this dental solves the problem and leaves him with squeaky clean teeth!!! |
