Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() Hi everyone! Its been a long time since I last logged in but I was doing a Google search and a yorkietalk thread came up. So here I am ![]() My Yorkie Morgan is now 10 years old. She's doing well for the most part and the small medical things that come up have been managed by diet and supplements. She's prone to UTIs so she gets a cranberry supplement which helps a lot. She's also had a few pancreatitis scares. Luckily I caught them soon enough and got her to the vet before anything serious happened. She is now eating Earthborn weight management because it was the only low fat grain free diet I could find a few years ago. She also only gets earthborn treat. I'm scared to give her anything else and banned everyone else from feeding her anything without my permission. Anyway, the issue now is that sometimes she won't eat all day and by night time I can tell she is uncomfortable and her stomach hurts. She constantly repositions herself when laying down and stretches out straight instead of curled up like she usually is. She'll also get off the couch and go lay on the rug which she never does. She's also paced around the room a few times recently which is weird. Eventually she'll throw up foam. I try to get her to eat by playing a game with her food and have to hand feed her. Sometimes this doesn't work and she'll refuse everything which just makes things worse. So I'm thinking about making food for her in the crockpot. She's always begging for people food (and rarely gets it) so I figure she'll eat this with no problem. So after this long, drawn out post my question is, does anyone have a recipe for pancreatitis diets, know a good resource I could go to research, or know a nutritionist I could call or go see (I'm in the NYC area)?

| ![]() You really need to look at contacting a vet nutritionist for the proper balanced diet if you want to home cook because if it's unbalanced it really could cause harm. Have you looked some of the prescription foods? I really love Royal Canin prescription food we have to use the hypoallergenic one and after several years Callie has yet to get bored from it.

| ![]() I have a pup I home cook for. She has lymhangectasia and had a really bad case of pancreatitis not long ago. I had to have her diet reformulated. She is on a very low fat diet. I had consulted with a vet nutritionist when she was diagnosed in 2011 and she has done very well on that diet. As Taylor suggested, Royal Canin does have a low fat GI diet that a lot of pups do well on. You could speak to your vet about it. The specialist had suggested it for my pup, but I opted to home cook instead. Here is the link for vet nutritionists: American College of Veterinary Nutrition | ACVN If you cannot find one close to you, your vet could do a consult with one via email. One that some people I know use is at: www.petdiets.com Dr. Remillard Oh, and welcome back ![]()

We are going to the vet today for her year senior blood panel so I'm going to ask her if she has any recommendations. I really don't want to put her on yucky prescription food, which she probably wouldn't eat anyway, unless it's a last resort. I'm going to check out the link too. Thanks!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() KELLIE - oh my gosh ![]() ![]() ![]() This might be a helpful thread. If you want to homecook, maybe also look into Know Better Pet Food and Honest Kitchen - maybe you could customize those mixes by using low-fat meats -- and, you could also use fish.

That said, if you can homecook it is wonderful. The amount of fat in my Cookie's diet is extremely low now. She is on tilapia and sweet potatoes and has supplements and oil in it. Vet nutritionists are awesome because they can make it to fit the pup. It isn't a one size fits all like the RX foods. Even if they are effective...sometimes they are not the best since each pup and condition can vary. Good luck

| ![]() Some of the prescription foods are really good it might also buy you time while you look for a vet nutritionist consult and it would be a good fall back for when life happens and you can't make the food. Mine is on prescription food not for pancreatitis but for IBD and it has changed her life.

| ![]() Hello, I'm in South Bay, Los Angeles. There's a company in Newport Beach, Just Food For Dogs, that sells freshly prepared diets, made w/human grade groceries. They're formulated by two vets w/nutritional specialties. They'll ship it frozen to you. They've prescription/non-prescription formulas. I fed non-prescription, "Rescue Remedy" made with white fish, sweet potato, vegetables, and fruit. It's very low in fat, and it worked wonders. The recipe's on the web. To make it yourself, I suggest ordering a free sample (large package); it'll be easier to make once you've seen it. You just pay shipping. I Bought the supplement, its key to nutritional balance. My dog didn't eat the Pancreatitis diet because it had rice; the remedy diet is very low in fat, and works just as well. If there's no company like it in your area, Check out the website: justfoodfordogs.com. They sell nutritional treats as well. I'll keep you and your pup in my thoughts. Good luck. | ![]() Reminds me of another website that is awesome and has a board certified vet nutritionist : www.balanceit.com I use their supplement: Balance It They don't formulate diets, but have great recipes for healthy pups. They also have blends that you just add meat or fish to. this link on their site is fun to create different recipes: https://secure.balanceit.com/recipeg...ver4/index.php
