With some medical conditions it absolutely is necessary and honestly very good foods. I have used them over the years without ever having an issue.

That said, if you can homecook it is wonderful. The amount of fat in my Cookie's diet is extremely low now. She is on tilapia and sweet potatoes and has supplements and oil in it. Vet nutritionists are awesome because they can make it to fit the pup. It isn't a one size fits all like the RX foods. Even if they are effective...sometimes they are not the best since each pup and condition can vary.
