| When puppies leave here I tell people, this may not be what your vet recommends, but this is what I recommend now. "feed what works" When a puppy leaves most importantly they need to eat, its not so much what they eat but that they eat regularly. If it means bits of cheese, beef, ham .....handfed then feed it, just make sure they eat. Dry out all the time. I offer canned twice a day, morning and evening. If they want to offer Lil ceasars, Id say give it to them. Puppies who live here have had these things so its never a new treat( ham, cheese...etc) I offer Low protein canned and many will think its junk.....its pedigree puppy. Dry is most of the time Eukanuba, switched to another quality dry for variety at times. This is their staple diet. At this time Im establishing consistent eating habits, I do sometimes buy natural canned but as a breeder I want them to eat very well. After a puppy is established in a new home, I recommend they stay on dry only most of the time. But heck they want treats, just like I crave potato chips with dip!!! or greasey french fries!!! Or ice cream with tons of chocolate syrup!......yum!!! So if occasionally they want some junk, let them have it!!!!! Unless of course they because of health are on a special diet. Right or wrong this is what I do. |

No Longer a Member | Gizmo has been on a tin of Cesar twice a day for a few weeks. As with some other dogs, this is all I can get him to eat. I recieved samples of Innova in the mail yesterday and put it out..he turned his nose up at it and walked away. A couple hours later as I was cooking dinner I heard him ratting around in the bowl and soon after a bunch of crunching going on, I was so excited. So now I will be giving him a little ceasar with the Innova I think..and Cesar has not proven to be cheap for me either. Twice a day at .99 you do the math. An expensive premium dry doesn't cost this much, but its all he would eat and have had no tummy problems since he's been on it. I do appreciate the people that have reccomended the Innova, I would have never known about it. |

| So much to say! Hmm... where to start??? I have read through this thread in it's entirety to gain some insight in regards to suggested feeding for when I get a Yorkie. I would like to give my opinions about some of these things and hear what everyone thinks. I have owned several different breeds of dogs in my life and spent a lot of time researching nutrition. It sounds to me like a lot of important factors are being left out of this thread. Like humans, all animals require a certain amount of nutritional elements. It seems that everyone already understands this and has taken a lot of effort to determine the proper values. However, not one person has discussed the fact that, like humans, not every dog's body is the same. Each dog's digestive system is going to process things differently. Some more so then others. Similarly, some dogs can tolerate ingredients that others cannot. Some may even have allergies to certain ingredients causing vomitting, runny stool, lack of appetite, skin reactions, or worse. There has been no mention of the "filler" ingredients in these dog foods which can be potentially dangerous to some pups. In addition, changing from one brand of food to another can be very upsetting for their stomach by itself. Remember to make the change slowly and in moderation. I am also curious... I do not believe in using moist food which I see a LOT of you do. Do you feel that this is necessary to the breed? The only reason I do not use wet food is because it does not provide any dental benefits. The crunching of the hard food aids in tartar removal. And last, I hear a lot of people mention that their pups are picky eaters. It has been my experience that a pup will only become picky and refuse food when they have been exposed to multiple choices. Dogs that are fed "people food" or multiple brands, flavors, or types are more likely to turn up their noses and wait for something better to come along. They are just like children in this sense. I think the most important thing is to find the foods that meet the nutritional values suggested by people educated in the matter and then over time, try to find the one that is best suited for your pups. There are going to be a lot of different results coming from the same foods because your pups are all different. Now that I have written a novel (haha), I would love to hear what everyone thinks. |

| Any purina pro plan users? Hi everyone, I am a little shocked by the Cesar's thread...have been feeding my 6 month old puppy a tablespoon of Cesars, added purina pro plan and then some hot water....it sounds like the Cesars has no nutritional value at all....sometimes my puppy snubs her nose at meals all together? Should she be on two meals or three? Should I change the times? Has anyone else had any problems with purina pro plan and picky eaters? |

| On this thread the amount of protein our yorkies should get is discussed: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...hlight=protein Innova Evo is WAY too high in protein content for these little dogs. Dog foods with high protein are meant for outside dogs or dogs that have a lot of energy and get lots of exercise. I am not sure of the protein content in Royal Canine, but if it is over the recommended amount in the thread listed above, then it probably has too much protein. On Ceasers, I have EXTREMELY picky eaters. I tried 6 or 7 dry dog foods before I found one they liked (which ended up being Chicken Soup). In the mornings I feed 1 tsp of wet food mixed with their dry food and leave dry food out the rest of the day. I fed Ceasers for about a week, mainly bc it was convenient to buy and it came in cute little packages Then I read the ingredients on there and I would just rather my yorkies eat something more healthy. I mean, I have invested a lot of time and money in these little babies and I just want to give them the best thing for their health as possible. I switched my doggies to Blue Buffalo canned food. They absolutely LOVE it and it is ALL NATURAL! You can actually see the chunks of vegetables in there. AND the best part is, you can actually get it at PETsMART!!! YAY! If my picky eaters like it, I am sure ANY yorkie will like it. |

| I started out my little Bailey on Innova as instructed by my breeder. She had no problems with it and ate just fine. Then I decided to try the Purina brand puppy food and it immediately made her have horrendously bad breath. So I switched back and now her breath is better again. I have heard about certain dog foods having too much protien for these dogs, but I honestly am not so sure I believe that. Just because so many veterenarians say otherwise. Also, many people will say it's too much and is intended for dogs that expel more energy. Well, you certainly haven't spent a day with Bailey then because she has more spunk and energy then most big dogs. So this makes me wonder just what is the possible effect of too much protien anyway? |

| I've been reading a lot of threads on dry food. Its seems there is many concerns with it and im just wondering if thefood my breeder recommended is healthy for my pups. They love it and though you cant get it at the store (it gets shipped to me regularly) i havent had any issues but at the same time i am not very knowledgeable about ingredients, and all that stuff. Can someone check it out for me and tell me if it sounds healthy? Here is the link http://www.healthypetnet.com/Healthy...egory=Dog_Food you'll have to copy and paste it. There is a section where it talks about the ingredients. Hopefully someone has time to check it out and get back to me. Thanks
