| What is the typical blood sugar for a puppy? I know hypoglycemia is a big issue with small dogs and I'm curious if it would be crazy for me to check my dogs blood sugar? I'm diabetic so I definitely have a spare blood meter lying around somewhere and I'm curious if dogs maintain a similar blood sugar level to humans or if they're different (higher/lower?) |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Normal is 75-120, even though 80ish is considered hypo and 60 is considered a danger zone.

| Hypoglycemia is a concern with small, young puppies if they are not eating. Is your pup in that catagory? If so, I think it is much more important to get the pup eating properly and often and watch for the physical symptoms of hypoglycemia if the pup is not eating or is playing too hard. My Dog Meika was diabetic. Canine glucose meters (I had Alpha Trak) are calibrated differently than human meters and use different test strips (at about $1 each). I have to say that pricking her and getting a drop of blood from her ear (recommended place for dogs) was the most stressful thing I ever had to do. You are better off to get the pup eating properly, and have some Nutrical available to give the pup if it does not eat, and you see signs of hypo.

| With these episodes, I would recommend getting a bile acid test done before they puppy comes to you. It could be signs of more serious health problems. |

I too would ask for a bile acid test, although if the pup is really having hypoglycemia the 12 hr fasting would not be good. What is the actual weight of the pup at 5 months?
