2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | UGH !! Fall allergies & Fleas are the Worst. Seasonal allergies are the worst . . two of my four pups deal with them. Each to a different severity but all really horrible reactions. Chewing none stop, pulling the hair out on their back legs and rear ends. But they don't stop there, they keep chewing to the point of causing red irritated patches which turn into an infection and than we end up at the vets for a round of antibiotics. Which never helps with the allergies only the infections. I hate it and I hate seeing my babies suffering from it. They are just miserable during this time of year. Since Brandi was diagnosed with AID Auto Immune Deficiency and has been on steroids her allergies have not even kicked in this years. Which was such a blessing because it got so bad in years past and she really does not need to deal with any more in her life right now. Since Brandi has been on them I have researched some of the effects that using steroids can have with long term use and it is a very scary thing to imagine. I have major concerns about her being on them. but she has no choice in the matter due to her illness. Quincy is my other pup who suffers from fall allergies and I just could not sit back and watch him suffering any more. He has been so miserable and causing so much harm to himself for so many years now. But when I saw the that Brandi's allergies were being controlled and seeing the difference the steroids made I ask if they would be safe for Quincy and was assured that they would be. So he too is now on them. He has been on a much lower dose of the steroids due to his age for just under a week now and thank goodness his allergies are now under control as well. But not before he had a chance to chew his legs up and totally tear the hair off of his hind legs and was running around the house looking like a chicken. Quincy is 11yrs old and I worry about him being on them. Thankfully it is for a short period of time just to get us through until winter hits. Brandi on the other hand has no choice. At this point it is the only thing that is keeping her from getting any sort of infection and keeping her AID under control. Does anyone know of any other kind of allergy meds that would be just as effective with less harmful effects ? Ruby has the most mild case of fleas. I check her 2-3 times a day. She/all of them are on flea meds and I have sprayed her entire body with a flea repellent. I have given her a flea bath and during grooming and our daily flea checks I have only found #1 live flea on her and 2 dead ones. So why is she still chewing and scratching ? I wish I know . . . Apparently the meds are not working. This is what we use: * Advantage topical * Hartz flea spray What flea meds are your babies on and Do they work 100% of the time / not one flea ?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear the problems you are having. Cali my one with bad allergies is on Atopica and that really helped with her scratching. Also, when i found a flea on Pixie and they were all scratching, my vet said it can take a little while for the reaction to go away after a flea bite. I have always heard to stay away from anything by Hartz. I don't know what else you could use. Maybe the vet has some products that are safe to use. I hope you can get them relief, I hate it when they are all itchy.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog My friend put that advantage on her jack Russell and that dog still scratched. She had to wait a month and now she put on comfortis and the dog is fine. No itching. I use revolution on my yorkies with no problems I really think your flea med is not working. Are you feeding them good dog food or that will cause itching. I had a poodle itched crazy and the vet said get venison base food and that cleared her up. I hope your dogs find relief soon. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Thanks, I'll look into both of those products. My vet doesn't care a lot of different products for flea control. Well lets say inexpensive products. Everything cost way too much and I have four dogs to treat so it can get a bit pricey. But if it works it would be worth it to give them some relief.

| I have Barney on Claritin which is working very well for his late summer/early fall allergies. My vet wanted to start on that, and if it didnt work to try Temeril-P. Luckily it worked. My other dog is on Atopica all year for her severe all-year-round allergies. I have my dogs on Frontline Plus, they have been on it for 13 years and they have never had a flea. I use half doses and apply it every 3 months except in the summer when they are outside more and I apply it monthly for ticks. Frontline Plus covers fleas for three months and ticks if applied monthly.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Thankfully we have only ever had one tick in all of our years of having dogs. Plus I keep checking Ruby several time a day for fleas and can not find a one., except for the two that I found last week. Which makes me think that she may have allergies also.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | The flea meds seem to be working, so now I have to look into an allergy remedy for Ruby. My vet says it ok to give .05 of Benadryl so I'll give that a try first and if that does not do the trip its off to the vet once again. Have I said how I HATE dry, seasonal weather . . Ugh !!

If you're not worried about ticks, you could just use sentinel tablets for heartworm + fleas etc.

| When Peanut was having really bad allergies my Vet told me to get the Walgreens brand. It’s called Wal-Finate Allergy Relief: Walgreens*Wal-Finate Allergy Relief Tablets | Walgreens I gave Peanut ½ a pill. It really worked well for him. We use K9 Advantix. I've been using Advantix since he was young enough to have it one. I never seen a flea on him or tick.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Dawn, wow, your poor babies! And you too, having to watch it! Allergies are just miserable to watch and you feel so helpless. I'm SO happy that you've found some solutions, and I know the relief you feel. Sure, steroids aren't the best med in the world to be on long term, however, it sounds to me like for one dog, it's absolutely necessary (AID) and for the other, it will only be used seasonally (good thing!). It sounds like for Brandi, she will have to be on them forever, is that right? For Quincy though, you may want to think about Atopica...he can start this med even if/when he is on steroids, so that means you can ramp up the Atopica (which takes about 6 wks) while he's still getting relief w/ the steroids. Another med to consider is Temaril-P which has a bit less steroid in it, and also contains an antihistamine...so it is probably slightly less strong than his current steroid. The good news for Quincy is that his allergies are seasonal, so even if you must use steroids, it's only for a while. If you do decide to try Atopica now, or next year, just remember that you want to ramp UP before the pollens start getting worse.

Yes, Brandi will have to be on them for the rest of her life. Unless she become immune to them or they stop working. Than we'll move on to the next form of treatment.
