| Any Ideas What It Could Be....Anyone? Hi, just wondered if anyone has had a Yorkie with the same or similar problems as ours and maybe could help with what is causing it please. Our Yorkie is seven and has been is excellent health up until two years ago...he isn't in bad health now but has a problem that has been re occurring over the last two years and I think it has stumped the vets. Two years ago our Yorkie started with bouts of losing control of his bladder...it didn't happen often and it still doesn't. He pees normally and then every once a month he will just stand there and floods of pee will come out. Ok, so he's had frequent blood and urine tests that come back normal...kidneys excellent and nothing that shows up to be bad...he's had two ultra sounds scans and cells were taken from the neck of the bladder to rule out bladder cancer which came back negative and he's in excellent shape and hasn't lost any weight and urine taken directly from his bladder for culture testing which came back as infection found. So the vets reckoned on Cystitis and treated with antibiotics...he's been on and off antibiotics ever since and on Cranimals powder...he's fed on Nature Diet dog food which is a wet food. Now the problem seems to calm and then starts again. His penis always looks red and sore so was given vasaline to put on it and it did help for a while. I just wonder if anyone has had the same or similar with any of their dogs and could advise as to what maybe would help or what to do next. Thanks x Last edited by mitchell; 07-27-2013 at 05:29 AM. |

| Has a Bile Acid Test (BAT) been done? I'm assuming a Culture and Sensitivity test was done on the urine... Some bacterias take a few rounds of ABs to clear. Also, were any stones or sediment seen? If so, what was the composition?

When he had a urine test done before Christmas they said some crystals were found but as to the composition, again I can't say but they did say it was very slight and nothing more was said other than that they wanted to put him on a Hills Prescription diet for this but I don't like Hills and here in the UK it costs a fortune, you really have to take out a mortgage to buy it and if it's something that's gonna be for life then we really cannot afford it....if we could find a food that works the same as Hills but can be bought from pet store at a fraction of the price then that would be great. | Exactly what type of Hill's did the vet recommend? That may give a glue as to the type of sediment found.

| It would have been the tinned but they didn't specify, they just said that this may be their next step but I told them that even if it was the next step we couldn't afford it....sorry x |

| I have a dog that has kidney issues... I agree the hill's in can form is very expensive. I would feed it to Sammy and do without something else if I choose to but I don't like it for other reasons...so I homecook. Ask the vet about the hill's dry food (kibble) it is a bit less and you don't have the waste of spoiled food as you may in the can . Also ask your vet about a receipe to meet your dogs needs and suppliment with the kibble. Good luck and take care

| This is all really dependent on the cause... but here is a good article on UTI in dogs: How Can I Treat My Dog's Bladder Infection? | eHow I would try to feed a good/better quality food. Tinned is better as it contains more water, which is important for dogs with UTI. If you're feeding a dry food, you can compensate by adding water to the kibble. Also you can add a low sodium chicken broth to the water to encourage him to drink more, or ice cubes if he likes ice. You may also want to consider home cooking... it can be done in batches and frozen.

| Here is a site to help you make your own nutritionally complete dog food: https://secure.balanceit.com/ Also I agree with discussing your feeding options with your vet...

| That looks to be a good food... but best to get specifics from your vet... like which ingredients to avoid, or reduced ash /magnesium depending on the specifics of his problem. I will venture to say that infection usually accompanies struvites, but I can't seem to find that article at this moment... it may have been in a thread on here somewhere. So let us know what the vet says and we'll be able to make more specific suggestions. In the meantime, you can add a bit more water to the tinned food to increase his water consumption.
