Omg How on Earth did THAT happen???

Hi YT Family,
Sorry to have been MIA for a while. So many things happening I'm afraid I have lost track of everyone, including myself. LOL

We (Hansel, Princess Sophie, and I) are on a road trip. Currently in Cedar Falls, IA. Yippy! We are taking some time to visit our daughters. Our oldest DD lives here and we will get to be with her and her DH till Sunday afternoon, then we pack up again and head toward Minneapolis, MN where we will visit our youngest daughter. The drive time yesterday was long but well worth it.

My problem, or should I say my dog's problem is that yesterday when petting Sophie, I noticed something sticky on her bottom. Yikes!! Upon taking a closer look, I pulled a long almost white (partly covered in poo) flat string out of her bottom. We have worms! Ugh!! I was googling online and I think it's tape worms.

Now my worry is (besides for my own dogs)...my daughter has cats. They are hiding in the 2nd bedroom while we are here. I know both my dogs will have to be treated for worms but will her cats need to be treated as well? If they do, I want to pay for it.

Also, do I need to find a vet locally and have my dogs treated asap or (and I know this really sounds bad) but can my dogs wait till we get bak home (next thursday) to go to our vet to be treated for this. I just hate the thought that my dogs are having to deal with this and I know some of these types of things can make them really ill. Can someone offer some advice on how to handle all of this??

Thanks so much!!

Unless the cats have close contact with your dogs poo they most likely will not get worms. I believe you can wait untill you get to your vet to treat it

Thanks so much! I was really starting to get worried. I have no idea where she picked this up. The breeder's vet sent a letter with all that she had been treated for (shots, worms, etc.) when we brought her home so I don't know how this could have happened. I thought once the puppies had been wormed and they were bring treated monthly they wouldn't get worms. Guess I was really wrong. Thanks so much for your prompt response. It does ease my mind!

I wondered what happened to you, figured you were on summer vacation!

You my friend are very brave, I myself would have fainted upon such discovery...upon waking up I would have called my mother hysterically shouting about worms taking over the planet...once I got my wits about me, I would have grabbed all three and herded them to the car for a ride to the emergency vet and paid bucu bucks to rid them of the plague that I'm sure everyone I know that's been near my babies conspired and bestowed them with such infestation...I would have then sterilized every surface and every material they came in contact with. After completing this I would have called Yorkiemom1 to find out if I did it right and then I would have come to YT to warn all YTers of my terrible fate...completely exhausted I would ten collapse in bed and have nightmares about said worms repopulating inside my little pups...woken up screaming and starting the procedure all over....hehehehe
I'm funny like that!

I'm sure it will be fine until you get home but maybe a call to the vet just to make sure? ewwww I hate the animal things that can happen to our babies!

Hope your having fun and relaxing a little...they will be fine, according to YT!

If it is Tapeworm they get those from eating a flea.

So she picked up a flea somewhere along the way.

When my cat had tapeworms, I noticed it as tiny rice grain-like particles in her sleeping area. The vet told me that those were tape worm segments that are shed when the worms crawl out of her butt at night, and they can be spread if another animal consumes one of those "rice grains." If it were me, I would keep the afflicted dog in isolation and get it to a vet for a deworming ASAP--I wouldn't wait a full week. Otherwise you may be spreading tapeworms to the other animals.

Besides fleas and poo, the tape worms can also be spread by segments that look like tiny grains of rice--they are shed while the dog sleeps, and they look clean, not like something nasty at all. When I found a bunch of them on my bed where my cat had been sleeping, I washed the sheets and blankets and got her to the vet for deworming medicine ASAP. I didn't take her to the ER, but I did go to the vet's at the next regular office hours.

Here's a good article about tape worms and how to get rid of them:

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate everyone's input!

Since I'm out of town, I really don't want to take my dogs to a vet we have no knowledge of. That and the fact that it's Saturday afternoon, unless we found an emergency vet, we couldn't do anything about it today anyway.

We leave for my youngest daughter's house tomorrow afternoon and she does't have any pets at all and that is the reason I would like to wait until we get back home. If it's a life and death situation by all means, I'll be on the phone to find the first emergency vet I can find in this area, otherwise...

Waiting...does that make me a bad mommy??

You are a brave woman not to have fainted dead away when you saw what you saw! Yikes with knobs on!!! I am so squeamish I had to stop reading after the long white part and then just read the comments. Poor little Sophie and poor you! Oh, my! I imagine any nice vet clinic in a good part of town would be able to treat this but if you are on your way home or can get your little one into the vet Monday, I wouldn't stress I don't think. Well, go ahead and stress(you are a Yorkie mom, after all) but you can probably wait for your own vet unless your dog is having symptoms or behaving strangely.

No I dont think it makes you a bad mommy and yes I think you can wait and no I wouldnt go to an emergency vet over worms. My cat had tapeworms one time and I wasnt even sure how long she had them when I found them it could have been awhile and most lkely was since I dont get up close and personal with her poop. I got a vet appt later on in the week and got her meds and she was just fine. They get tapeworms from injesting fleas which is a pretty common thing for pets to do

Doing a little more research, those rice grain-like segments that are shed out of an infected animal's butt DO contain tapeworm eggs, but the good news is that a flea has to eat the tapeworm egg in order for it to develop into something that can infect another pet. The flea, an intermediate host, is required for the tapeworm to complete its life cycle.

Any vet can prescribe the appropriate dewormer, but if you want to wait until you get home, Sophie should be okay. After Sophie is dewormed, clean her sleeping areas carefully so another flea doesn't gobble up an egg and give Sophie another tapeworm.

And don't feel like a bad mother--all it takes is Sophie eating one flea, and it could have happened anywhere. It doesn't mean that Sophie has a flea infestation.

Here is another article about the tapeworm life cycle:

Tapeworms In Your Dog Or Cat

You have much bigger knockers (figuratively speaking, pardon the pun) than I do. I would have done as others and either fainted or went into perma-hysterics at the discovery.

To add my two cents I think it's fine waiting until you can take your fluffies to their regular vet.

I also wanted to add though - and I hope I'm not overstepping, but I was told by our vet to never ever pull anything out of dog's bohonkus (tushy) because it can damage their intestinal wall on the way out (depending on what it is). Sprout had a piece of tinsel hanging out his butt when he was a puppy (around Christmastime). I pulled it out and he was fine but I was joking about it at the vet's a month later and vet read me the riot act and said if any of them had something hanging out their butt to bring them into the office because you never know what it might be clinging to on the inside....thought he was going to whip the ruler out on my wrist, too (but he didn't).

I'm sure Sophie will be fine and I would definitely wait and go to my regular vet if it were me.

The only thing second and third opinions have gotten me so far is a lot of confusion.

Ok, I'm good! I am going to keep a close eye on her just in case something else is coming out of "that end". As long as she's behaving normally and eating and drinking normally, we will wait but if I see anything strange...we will find a good vet. Other than that, we are just going to enjoy life and visiting with my dear daughters'! Hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll be back next week after we get home unless other questions pop up! Thanks everyone!!
