| I don't really know! Apart from taste tests for marketing I would assume not though. However, I guess the FDA does have health and safety standards that they monitor, test and control. I am getting to the stage where I am more concerned about ingredients in my dog's food than those in mine. LOL! As humans we can decide what to eat, but our pets depend on us and do not have a say. That is a big responsibility. |

| Not necessary. Most beauty products do. All drugs, human and veterinary, do. Rx food for dogs does because it is functioning as a drug. All dog food should because most dogs et one single kibble constantly and have no variety. I'd have a big problem with no feeding trials. Science is both amazing and devastating.

We have to have testing....in the medical field we MUST use animals for testing....like you, I dont like it, but it is necessary ....we have animal research labs in the basements of every teaching hospital in ther Medical Center...any of you with pacemakers, heart transplants, kidney transplants, lung transplants....those procedures were all tested and perfected on animals in the basements of every teaching hospital/research hospital in this country. I can not allow myself to think about it....and I do NOT venture down into those areas to see the animals.....my coworker in my office does research on GERD and the surgery for that medical issue...using dogs....it HAS to be done...so I personally function with the proverb, "If you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen". And my coworker will not discuss what he does, in front of me.... Ellie May, I just want to know, was I eating rendered dead pets when I was sharing a milk bone with Skippy?????!!!!!!!!!! | |

| I think what I also question is why do animals hv to accept the experiments, well of course only because they can't fight or choose their own life, that's really sad but true. As it was quoted in the news, they choose dogs for their obedience and loyal trust to humans, this is honestly very sad. It's okay if the food experimented on them doesn't kill them, but if the food kill them, imagine how many dogs could have died from experiments, but of course it is for the sake of other dogs, to create better food, which sounds a little bit unfair somehow ... but the most unacceptable one is of course using the dogs murdered from euthanasia for making other dog food, along with their collars. Using them for fertilizers sounds already weird to me ... Or maybe I'm just too sensitive and weak. My friend told me that when the dog died, we usually hv to give them to the vet and thy will take care of them for us? But knowing that there's this thing, I would prefer have it cremated in the future. Though I don't want to think about it now as he's still a big baby (1 year) and his life is still long, hopefully...

| I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We don't have human foods that offer a complete and balanced diet. I mean you can’t buy a can/bag of human chow or kibble, that’s the major difference. We also don't have human foods that are considered Rx, for example, dog food that will reduce the risk of kidney stones. Foods made for dogs have to be balanced. It’s important that we know if dogs foods will do what they promise consumers they will do, and this can’t be done without testing. Certain human foods and vitamins have been tested on humans and obviously, all foods that humans eat are tested because nothing is really new. Most foods are also tested individually for nutritional value. We do have diets that have been tested on humans to see if they are beneficial for the treatment of disease and or weight loss. There’s much research in nutrition, but still there is so much we just don’t know.

There is an Italian brand here that I just researched the last few days called Almo Nature, which is surely not sold in US or any other and it's very natural, even some said that even humans can eat that without any further side effects. I think from my research they are one of rare that don't experiment on animals, including other brand that I'm using now, the trainer, which unfortunately my yorkie is not eager to eat that (or maybe it's the "bad habit" of all yorkies who usually don't want to eat their kibbles, unless it is softened or added with other yummy wet food). As the others might hv said above, maybe the nicest one is if we know how to cook ourselves and maintain the nutrition inside.

And some dog food have failed feeding trials even though it looked right on paper. About the above article, yes, I suppose diseased meat could end up in pet food, but that would be illegal (it is considered adulterated if the diseased portion is not removed). It would be incredibly silly for major companies to take that chace (Champion apparently did though). And notice specific companies are ever named. Why???

| CVM = Center for Veterinary Medicine CPG Sec. 690.500 Uncooked Meat for Animal Food *CVM is aware of the sale of dead, dying, disabled, or diseased (4-D) animals to salvagers for use as animal food. Meat from these carcasses is boned and the meat is packaged or frozen without heat processing. The raw, frozen meat is shipped for use by several industries, including pet food manufacturers, zoos, greyhound kennels, and mink ranches. This meat may present a potential health hazard to the animals that consume it and to the people who handle it.*
