| Purina Ingredients Issue Guys I got a news from Italian page that Purina uses Dead body of dogs for its kibbles and also they support the experimentation of dogs. Is it true? This is what I quote from their page: The President of the American Association for the official control of food intake has admitted that it is common practice that the bodies of dead pet animals from euthanasia are used as components of dry food under the names "flesh and bones." These are used to supply Purina dog's 'ingredient - "flesh and blood"; including Purina Dog Chow, Alpo dry dog food, Purina Beneful, Purina Active Senior, Purina Fit & Trim, Purina Little Bites, Purina Healthy Morsels. Besides, they are also inside the following products for Purina cat food containing the ingredient "meat and bones" Purina Cat Chow, Friskies dry cat food. Beyond the horror of such a practice, phenobarbital, used to kill the animals, remains in significant quantities in the flesh of animals. In addition, the corpses of dogs killed in shelters are sent to factories and thrown into machines that shred them wearing collars against fleas and identification plate, which then are used to compose the kibbles. It's clear that the Purina is able to contain the cost of its products by using very low quality ingredients , but using animals from shelters is unjustifiable and unacceptable as there are also the health problems that might be caused. (And now we understand why, in America, killing animals in shelters can't be stopped , despite the protests of the people) ... In addition, the Purina supports vivisection producing food, specially designed for laboratory animals: LabDiet. Indeed, the web pages of LabDiet, recommend the various breeds that are better suited to animal testing. According to them, the Beagles would be compatible with the long-term experimentation, because "they adapt well to life in a cage." Greyhounds says Purina, are "a common choice for surgical experimentation." Eventually, the company asserts that the dogs are very popular for experimental animal, thanks "to their temperament and loyalty to their guardians." These are the statements of a company that supports dog experimentation no matter pet animals are their passion. How can the Purina claim to be "passionately committed to giving pets a better life," while it's simultaneously supporting vivisection? I hope to get clarification as I want to know your opinions...

| I was considering it to buy as my Bei doesn't like his current kibbles so much but then I got this review. I'm also waiting for the others to confirm or to deny ... :-s

| Purina is also the makers of the waggin train chicken jerky that killed hundreds of dogs for many years before they pulled it. Also there Beniful dog food was said to also be making dogs sick and possibly killing some.

| Things are done differently in other countries, so I really do not know anything about it. Royal Canin and Purina and other formulas are often different overseas and in other countries. There is no 'flesh and blood' on the label of any American Purina food.

| Oh my... so sad if this is true... and unacceptable. I was really considering purina, science plan, and royal canin as a change to an italian brand called the trainer. But it seems I will now just consider royal canin or other flavours of the trainer. For now I give him the flavour of duck, rice, and ananas and he doesn't seem to like it much. Aw, so this brand already got many negative reviews before.... Honestly, Bei is my first dog, so that's why I keep asking in this forum about many things I will hv question on. Really thanks for all of the inputs...

| Ah there isn't that label? But of course for Royal Canin i never heard any bad review on them. So far, they seem to be the best by far. For Purina, it was doubtful but I was attracted as they hv so many types to offer...

| Guys sorry, for these lines: These are used to supply Purina dog's 'ingredient - "flesh and blood"; including Purina Dog Chow, Alpo dry dog food, Purina Beneful, Purina Active Senior, Purina Fit & Trim, Purina Little Bites, Purina Healthy Morsels. Besides, they are also inside the following products for Purina cat food containing the ingredient "meat and bones" Purina Cat Chow, Friskies dry cat food. I got the translation wrong from Italian, it should be flesh and bones (carne ed ossa) not flesh and blood. Totally sorry. So, does anybody see the label flesh/meat and bones on the pack?

| I don't have any Purina products in my house since changing to Blue Buffalo this past November, so I can't look at any labels. Can you get Blue Buffalo in Italy? Huey has done very well since switching (no more inexplicable vomiting) and really seems to like the flavor of the grain free much better than he ever did Purina One, which I fed him for over 3 years. I also used to give him Waggin Train jerky treats. This forum might have saved his life.

| I know the whereabouts of the rendering plant in Vernon, CA where they process the dead dogs & cats. I used to work in a city next to it & passed by there, it would stink to high heaven. There's also Farmer John company & I would see pigs in trucks going to die, it was so sad. WARNING! This vid is very graphic, viewer discretion advised. Dead Dogs and Cats Use to Make Meat Meal by Mike Sagman For those who still insist euthanized dogs and cats are not used to make meat meals for animal feeds, this silent undercover video shot near Los Angeles1 in April 2007 offers indisputable proof. In a white paper published by LA County in 2004, the government assures its readers the meat meals are destined for use in fertilizer and animal feeds only. Although this document clearly denies any intent to produce food for companion animals, it should concern every pet owner because these meat meals are so accessible to the poultry feed industry. In any case, this is why I always suggest consumers avoid products made with anonymous meat meals and animal fats — and stick with species-identified ingredients.

| I don't want to watch the video, but the whole concept is mind boggling. You would think the FDA would have some say or argument with this, even though it is "just pet food".

| I don't buy into it. I feed home cooked foods 90% of the time. When I feed dog food, I use royal canin and Purina products.

The white paper claims that only live stock renderings like 'meat meal' go into pet food, not dead dogs & cats, but the dead dogs & cats that are rendered goes into agricultural feed...which ultimately lands in our pet food bowls.
