| Neutering? My male 2 year old yorkie hasn't gotten neutered and we do not plan to breed him. What are some pros and cons about neutering? Also is neutering my 2 year old dog safe? Will his temper change at all or will not be potty trained anymore or anything? |

| A non neutered dog can smell a dog in heat miles away and there are a lot of cases where dogs have really really hurt them selves trying to get to a dog in heat and ending up very injured, some dead, and some just completely lost. Yorkies are being stolen like crazy lately and a non fixed male is worth more money then a fixed one and he could get sold into a puppy mill. I also makes him not able to get testicular cancer. It is safe to do but you need to get the before blood work. It will not change your dogs attitude and it should not change that he is potty trained. Its also a good thing to do because of dog over population because there are always accidents with non fixed dogs.

| Thank you for the information but my dad still denies neutering our dog even with all the reasons we tell him. My mom and I want to neuter him but my dad says no. Hopefully we can convince him for Calvin's benefit. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Clyde was neutered at two years old, and it made a tremendous difference in his behavior. He listened to me better and he enjoyed spending time with me outdoors (he was always so distracted by females and marking his territory before being altered). He was a lot more relaxed (but still had energy) and other male dogs tried to attack him less. He stopped marking as much, but he still does some. To top it all off he won't have a chance of developing testicular cancer, as a poster above me mentioned. There were a LOT of benefits that came with neutering Clyde. I hope that your dad will change his mind with time since you don't plan on breeding him. The only con is that he gained a pound since being neutered and is a little less muscle "tone", but he still is really cute and everything lol |

| Behavioral issues can be resolved with the help of a good vet and/or trainer, and a commitment to intensive training. An un-neutered male, as mentioned above, can develop testicular cancer, run away in search of a female's scent, or injure/maim himself in the attempt. If by chance he does manage to hook up with a female, he could become even more aggressive. Worst case scenario, he could die from any or a combination of the above. Which risk is your dad willing to take?

| Spay and Neuter There is an excellent article in the Feb 2013 issue of "The Whole Dog Journal" about the pros and cons of this procedure. It states that pediatric procedures were originally carried out mainly for population control, but points out that there are also cons to doing this. I.E. it is not all good. It seems there is some discussion in the Vet world about early fixing, especially in very young dogs. It is a complex issue and there are differing views stated. I got the impression that there are disadvantages to spay/neuter before the dogs are fully matured. Please do not kill the messenger, I just write here as I had never seen any article questioning the procedure - only the advantages. |

| Neuter I agree that the article stresses the early spay/ neuter, but the author also addresses older dogs. However, if I remember rightly, the disadvantages are less in older dogs. I see that my post probably appeared not too helpful to the original poster's question, but I felt the article might make it easier to make the difficult decision and not feel too bad if the dog were not neutered. |

Remember too, that hundreds of eyes read these posts, so while it may not address specifically this older dog situation, your information is accurate and presents or at least encourages research before everyone goes running like lemmings to get their 14 week old babies spayed/neutered. There is alot of research being done in this area that people need to be familiar with, so whatever decision they choose to make, they make it based on scientific research and not someone elses agenda. | |
