| Yorkie 15 yrs old, Dental Health Risk ? Has anyone ever had their 'Senior" yorkies teeth cleaned and have there been any problems. My 3 1/2 lb. yorkie girl, who is blind with PRA shows no signs of bad health other than her teeth get a lot of tartar on them and is interferring with her chewing. I don't know what to decide to do.I know anesthesia is a " high risk " for the older yorkie, as is gum disease and other health problems. Can anyone help me decide about this issue or anyone had good/bad experiences with dentals with their furbabies.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Nikki the senior rehome yorkie I took in had to have all his teeth remove. He was given to an elderly lady from a rescue. His teeth were in terrible shape. I met his owner and she couldn't afford his medical care so her vet and I came to a deal to get all his teeth removed. Nikki was guesstimated to be 16 ish and he did great in surgery. His teeth were so rotten they had to do gum work. The surgery took several hours but Nikki came through it great. I had the pre surgical labwork done as I always do with any of mine. As long as your vet agrees and the blood work looks good she should be ok. I have to get my Pixie's done soon and it is always scary but it has to be done. Good luck.

| I have never had a problem with my seniors having a dental. Just make sure you blood work done prior to having it done. All that bacteria and bad teeth in the mouth can cause kidney and heart problems.

| Thanks so much for replying. Yes, Lacey will be having lab work and an exam done first to make sure she is ok for the dental. She's only 3.5 lbs. and seems to be in good health other than her teeth. I realize that the heart and liver can get into a mess with all the mouth bacteria which is something that I hope & pray that won't happen if antibiotics are given. This is a very reputible High Risk Emergency Hosp. with a great staff. Their specialty is high risk cases and emergency surgery. When talking with the dr. she did tell me about a case of a daschund that had a dental and while extracting some teeth his jaw broke and 3 months later he died due to the fact that he couldn't recover from the surgery, he was 16 yrs. old. That scares me ! Please pray all goes well for Lacey on tues morning, so we can keep her healthy a bit longer, she has a good quality of life now and if I made the wrong call to get her dental and she didn't make it, I'd never live with myself. Please say some prayers for her that all goes well for this tues morning. The dr. said to withhold food from her from 8 pm the nite before, just in case all lab work shows a 'go'. Thanks so much and I'll post on tues evening and let everyone know the results <3

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I will keep Lacey in my prayers for a safe surgery. I just made Pixie's appointment for her dental. She goes on the 28th. I have to pick up her antibiotics tomorrow. I will be looking for an update to say she is home and resting comfortably.

| Hello, I am new to this forum and have just posted my own thread on periodontal disease. I had my Yorkie's blood work done this morning and am waiting to hear back the results if it will be safe for him to go on with the oral surgery, which would be this Thursday. He is an older one of 8 yrs and its killing me seeing him not himself and so weak. Please let me know how Lacey's surgery went, your the first person I've found on here who went through what I am going through now. I hope your little Lacey is doing great! |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I would assume that it would be a safe procedure for a senior up. That is once they do the blood work before hand and all comes back clear. If there is any health issues regarding liver and those type of things they wont do it.
