With that being said, I don't think it's necessary to feed a yorkie or any dog a food with significantly higher levels of protein if they're not still growing or don't have a very active lifestyle. At the same time, I also don't believe it is harmful to feed a normal yorkie with a typical activity level higher protein food if your dog does well on it. I would prefer my dog to get calories and energy from a high quality protein/fat source than a carbohydrate source. I really enjoy reading about this kind of stuff and hearing other views...it makes me do more research and become even better informed! | |

| I think the idea of "high quality protein" fits in here. Some pet foods use very low quality protein sources. That can effect many aspects of digestion and being able to metabolize the food. A dog that is already hindered by a genetic problem is going to have further issues with low quality protein and carbohydrates that it's body was never made to deal with. |

| There are more cases of salomenella with dog food so why not explain the risk of feeding dog food if your going to do it with raw. Answer catering to big dog food companies

| not to mention dog food recalls also. It seems to me there is more risk to feeding dog food than raw

| Agreed. I have been feeding Gracie a commercial frozen raw for a year now as well as some freeze dried and have not experienced a recall. I'm sure others have been doing it much longer. The process of eliminating thane pathogens that they are talking about destroying would also destroy the very enzymes and nutrients that our pets get through raw food. I am very careful about cleaning all surfaces any raw food has come in contact with as well as always washing hands after touching raw meats. It certainly does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out. It is sad that so many of the dogs that would truly benefit from a good raw diet will never be allowed to try it due to this type of thing. |

Also, I question does the salmonella come from the kibble or the dog? Many animals have different bacteria in their saliva (salmonella included)... dog eats kibble and some saliva is left on remaining kibble in the bowl... along comes a child and plays with the food then puts their hands in their mouth and child becomes ill. This is where the rule "Children under the age of six years should not be actively involved in the care of any family pet" due to the fact that younger children are not reliable with handwashing after handling the food or the pet.. | YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I only have one Yorkie as you gals know, but my breeder has had many over her years of dog ownership and breeding. She has not shared with me any concerns over protein level in the food for Yorkies. She has made sure that I don't feed cheese. Just a wee tiney bit, and that is saved as a very very high value treat for Razzle. For me generally speaking, high quality food is a must for any dog. But what is most concerning to me, at this point are the number of out of shape and obese dogs and cats around!. That presents a huge health risk for the animal, and it is so sad because at least the obesity is easily prevented. Feed amounts appropriate to age and activity levels! Getting and keeping a dog in shape, should be relatively easy to. Walk your dog daily. You don't even need to power walk the pooch. If there is a hill or incline nearby, include this into your walk. I met a woman the other day; she was in a wheelchair, and she had her Yorkie trotting beside her electric wheelchair! We chatted for a bit. That dog was in better shape than Razzle. Buns and legs of solid muscle. Nice deep chest; and not an ounce of fat on her! She takes her dog to leashfree parks, does obedience training with her; and if weather is inclement she plays with her dog at least three hours per day Wowee She also has a personal assistant to help her wash and groom her gal.

| I should have said fatty proteins, like rich ones. This has also been my experience with my mini schnauzer. Tummy issues higher lethargy more weight gain and more bowl issues. The only thing my vet has against it is wanings of weight balanced dietand pancreas liver risks after or over time. However it was also specific to fatty or rich proteins too much red meats she also said in general any fatty diet.

| When you fed raw did you start dogs only after they were 6months old? Do you pull intestines or fully gut chickens for 8 months to allow the dogs to build up their immunities to raw? I only say this to wonder I°c others follow the raw schedule I was told about. Many people not to include you but many people hear about raw try it sy it doesnt work and then you find out they idnt transition correctly..like we hea RV about, with ppl switching ibble immedi at el TV and sayong oh this f ood made my dog sick

| Yes vitamin k is added to most dog foods to counteract rodent poisons. This happened like 30 years ago farmers utalized vit k drops for their working dogs while using poisons to deal with rodents raiding their crops etc...when market dog foods became more thn farm store specials they included k for this very reason...google. We feed raw kosher cuts not salted bacon yes shameful I know Derik sneaks it to the dogs behind my back but I know he does it I turn around as Im cooking and they are sitting perfectly in a straight line tails about to wag off
