I think the idea of "high quality protein" fits in here. Some pet foods use very low quality protein sources. That can effect many aspects of digestion and being able to metabolize the food. A dog that is already hindered by a genetic problem is going to have further issues with low quality protein and carbohydrates that it's body was never made to deal with.
