| Heartguard vs. Trifexis Jackson took his last Interceptor pill for heartworms last week. So he's good for the month but unfortunately since the whole Novartis thing with the plant shutting down, obviously we can't use that anymore. Our vet said they have very little left and it's almost out. They carry Heartguard and mentioned Trifexis is a new one they carry. First off, is Trifexis a pill? And is Heartguard only available in chewable form? I feel like I'd prefer Heartguard (as the Trifexis also protects against fleas - and we really don't have a flea problem, one less chemical we need). But Jackson will not take chewables as a treat... so is it a no-no to mash it all up and mix it in his food possibly? OR would it be better to wrap it in some cheese or something (like how I give him pills) and hold his mouth closed until he chews/swallows. Suggestions?

| Heartgard. They discontinued the pill form. Trifexis is a pill. Maybe Iverhart then?

| Thanks! Do you know anything in particular about Trifexis - would or wouldn't suggest it? We always used Iverhart Plus until 6 months ago when we started Interceptor. Never had any issues with it, but I did see a recall not too long ago for their large breed... is that anything to be worried about? I'd prefer Heartguard. But like I said, it'd probably be a task getting him to take it.

well , imo if he does not like treats you would be better off to get a pill form. The heartguard would be too big to wrap in something i think | |

| I just looked up Iverhart Plus and it does say flavored chewables. I used to give it to him wrapped in food and then he would swallow it... LoL... oops? I guess it's the same thing though, right, as long as it gets in him? The Iverhart must be a lot smaller than Heartguard.

| I just ordered Tibbe Heartguard and am really scared about changing him but his breeder had him on it the first 9 mos. of his life so I figured it would be safer to back to something he'd been on before the Interceptor. Still, when something works on him without problems, I hate to change & that first dose of Heartguard will be worrisome. I didn't know Heartguard was a chewable. Tibbe will swallow about any pill but if he doesn't like a chewable, he just won't take it, peanut butter wrapped or not. And now with his tummy troubles, I won't be able to use PB. I hope he will chew it.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Has Jackson tried Heartgard Plus chewables, or was it some other brand? Joey and Ralphie go nuts over them, although I’ve read of other dogs hating them. I think the Iverheart plus would be a good choice, it’s just the generic form of Heartgard and it’s cheaper. It comes in a chewable tablet, but it’s looks like it’s much smaller than the Heartgard plus, so it would be easy to cover it in a little cheese. The only reason I'm using the heartgard plus is they love them so, if I had to disguise them, I'd use a cheaper version. Iverhart Plus® Tablets (Generic)

| I had to break down and get my new baby the Iverheart Plus pill and then give her the Pogram tablet about 2 day's later. I have always used Sentinel and since they no longer have it I had to go this route with her.

Since we had no issues before with it, may just go back to Iverhart Plus. It's a lot cheaper too. We can buy it at the place where he got neutered right near my dads place.

| I will not use Trifexis. Seems all of the vets are pushing it now. It has Comfortis in it....and that can cause stomach upsets. I have used Heartgard for years and that is what I will stick with. I do have a couple on Sentinel...and have stocked up on it .. praying it will return to the market soon.

| Please do your homework on any new/different product you use on your beloved Yorkie. I have been using Revolution on my dogs and never thought anything of it until I got Eli from a breeder. She did not want me to use Revolution because it could cause neurological issues. Couldn't believe it because I had noticed that my 16 yr. old, Rosie, was having tremors after I applied it. They got quite severe but appear to be diminishing in severity. She has always reacted badly to flea meds but I never paid close enough attention. My little Cocoa, may she rest in peace, always took up my time and attention. I have now spent time on the net researching. What I find is scary. Basically we are putting poison into/onto our dogs when we apply flea prevention, etc. One has to weigh the risks. There are natural flea preventives out there but it takes diligence to keep up with the regiment. There are no heartworm natural preventatives so you have to read and decide. Do not just take what your vet says at face value. Have read horrible stories about Proheart6 which is a 6 month shot preventative. It was pulled off the market in 2004, bought by another company and chose to remarket it with stipulations for the vets. Not all vets follow through. How many of us would just give our pet the shot if our vet recommended it even if we had to sign a waiver? I recently bought Triflexis to give to my doggies. Went home and did research and returned the product. I am now trying Comfortis as a flea preventative and Interceptor as a heart preventative. Rosie will be getting a natural flea preventative. May switch all my dogs to it if it works out. I decided to try these two because of the reviews I read. Lesser of the other evils, if you want. We put so many poisons into our dogs....vaccinations, flea and heartworm/worms preventatives, vitamins cooked out of the kibble and replaced with additives. Ugh! My point is: Do your research. You may come up with an entirely different opinion then mine. I would like to hear them. I'm open to anything that would be safer for my dogs. ~Joanne~

| Here is some information where they say to feed them before giving it.... Money Saving Tip 74: Avoid Nausea and Save Money I just like to avoid things that cause stomach upsets if I can.

| Yes, there is a chance that Comfortis could cause an upset stomach. My vet said that they have found that if a dog throws up the first time it is given, the chances are that it will not happen the second month. Was also told to not give the heartworm and the flea preventative at the same time. Put a few days in between. Also give both with food. Will try it. Hate the topical stuff. ~Joanne~

| So you have never had any issues with Advantage? Was wondering about that. Not sure my vet carries it. I agree about using tried and true and I will do more research before I give the Comfortis. Thank you for your input, Ladyjane. Your experience in invaluable. ~Joanne~
