Default Heartguard vs. Trifexis

Jackson took his last Interceptor pill for heartworms last week. So he's good for the month but unfortunately since the whole Novartis thing with the plant shutting down, obviously we can't use that anymore. Our vet said they have very little left and it's almost out.

They carry Heartguard and mentioned Trifexis is a new one they carry.

First off, is Trifexis a pill? And is Heartguard only available in chewable form?

I feel like I'd prefer Heartguard (as the Trifexis also protects against fleas - and we really don't have a flea problem, one less chemical we need). But Jackson will not take chewables as a treat... so is it a no-no to mash it all up and mix it in his food possibly? OR would it be better to wrap it in some cheese or something (like how I give him pills) and hold his mouth closed until he chews/swallows.

Suggestions?
