| Diabetes and Cushings Disease Our 2 yorkies are 13 - sisters that we've had since babies. Molly does VERY well, only slight problems. But Bailey has multiple health problems. Found out yesterday she has Diabetes and Cushings disease. Am dealing with the insulin shots just fine, but having major problems with getting her to eat. Also, getting her pills down her for her heart, leg, collapsing trachea and other problems is difficult now - never was before. She won't take the pill pockets anymore. How do I hide the pills? ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we love these 2 dogs so much we are willing to go to great lengths to make their last years as good as possible. |

I'm so sorry your babies have these problems. Been there many times with my late older ones, who have since passed.

| Thanks for the tip with cream cheese -- may give that a try, even with the diabetes, just to get the pills down her. Thanks for the kind words....its hard trying to help her enjoy her last part of her life & keep her as healthy as possible. Did your babies have diabetes or cushings disease? |

| So sorry to hear about your babies health deteriorating. When I was growing up, we had a sheltie who was diagnosed with Cushings. She did not want to eat either and sadly, it wasn't long after the diagnosis was made that we ended up putting her to sleep. I don't remember too much, but I do remember trying to feed her with a syringe. I don't know what kind of pills you need to give your baby, but if you can crush them, maybe mix them up in a wet food and feed to her with a syringe. Oh, I wish you and your babies the best and will say prayers for all of you.

| There is a drug that really helps to stimulate an appetite. I used it for one of my renal failure pups and I have had friends use it successfully with their sickly pups. It is mirtazapine.....you might want to ask your vet if it would help. You do need an RX for it.

| Thank you, Ladyjane and Jacksmom, for your help. I think at this point we're going to go on instinct more than following the vet's recommendation totally. I'll do everything I can to stick to a healthy, natural diet, by cooking their food (both will eat the same way), and trying to figure out how close we are to what she needs, calorie-wise. I'm going to continue the meds in whatever form it takes to get it down her (as her heart problem is worsening), and just keep her as happy as possible. We are aware that we only have a few months with her, at best, so we're going for quality time till that time comes. My husband talked to the vet about a service who will come to our home when we have to put her down, so she can pass with dignity and comfort in her own home. But any other information from folks would sure help...she's too skinny. |

| Another thing that you might consider is a vet nutritionist consult. I have used them for sick pups and been very pleased. You can find one at: American College of Veterinary Nutrition Many do telephone or email consults. With one I had a couple of years ago, my vet did all of the initial contact and sent my pup's records. I then got a home cooked diet made especially for him and while he only lived about six more months, it was longer than would have been had I not done that. Well worth it! Actually the cost was not much at all...$150 for consult and the recipes. I agree with you, that the most important thing is to keep the quality of life as long as possible.

| hello and also a warm welcome to yorkie talk, glad you found this site. i am so sorry to hear that your sweet bailey is having these problems. i always used low fat cheese for giving my zowi her meds, but after a bout of pancreatitis we now use a low fat canned (whitefish) dog food to slip her her meds. she was constipated and then had bad diahrrea and vomitting so our dr advised not to use the cheese after that incident because cush dogs are very prone to pancreatitis. my (now) 11 year old girl zowi was diagnosed with cushing's june 2011, and hypothyroid september 2011. i remember how scared i was when she was first diagnosed and feeling like my girl wouldn't be around much longer either. like hypothyroid and cushing's, diabetes and cushing's have a direct link to each other and it is fairly common to have both endocrine diseases present. i am going to refer you to a yahoo group site that has been a complete godsend to me, offering a vast amount of info and people who have experienced what you're going through first hand. there is also a lot of info on diabetes and all of the other diseases that can be linked to cushing's. there are several people there very familiar with treating both cushings and diabetes concurrerntly and i am positive that you will find a lot of help there. as a member of this group, i see other members posting about their dogs having both cushing's and diabetes on a weekly basis and getting some great advice. maybe you could find something or someone there that could help her with her inappetence. i was referred to this group by another member of yorkie talk who also has a cush pup. here's a link to the site: CanineCushings-AutoimmuneCare : Cushing's Syndrome | Autoimmune Disease my dear zowi is doing great right now. it was very expensive and trying in the beginning, but i am so glad that she has made a turn around. it was all worth it to have my girl feeling better! her cushing's, thyroid issues, liver issues, pancreas issues are all in check, at least for now. (knocking on wood) i would also like to warn you that there are several "remedies" online that have no clinical proof whatsoever that they actually work so i personally wouldn't waste time or money giving something that could potentially make her worse. my final advice is that you could find an internal medicine specialist in your area to take her for another opinion or further advice, particularly one with an interest in endocrinology. here's a link to the acvim to locate an ims in your area. ACVIM again, i am so sorry that you and bailey are going through this. i will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. i would also like to add that i'm glad your molly is doing so well at 13. sending hugs and well wishes to you and your girls!
