| Tear stains & diet I would love to know what food you are feeding your pups that resolved the issue of tear stains. I have tried numerous brands to no avail...Wellness Super 5, Natural Balance Alpha, Blue Wilderness, Organix. |

| The only thing that cleared up tears stains for me was to grow out the hair around their eyes. It's amazing how much less stains they have since their hair has grown.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey had bad tear staining when I switched foods once, and it lasted a few weeks after we switched back, so it can take a while to completely clear up if food is the culprit, but I noticed a huge difference right away. Other dogs can handle the food that Joey had just fine, so it’s more about what your dog is allergic to. It could be environmental allergies as well. I agree with Megansmomma, growing the hair out can make a difference, no more short hairs to poke the eyes and cause tearing. Here’s a good article on tearing the causes and cures. | Another thing to consider is that it isn't the food. Beemer has blocked tear ducts. I've worked on them with warm wet washclothes to no avail. No change in food or water has had any effect. My groomer suggested that I have the vet check to see if his ducts are blocked. It's a simple dye test. Now I can't remember exactly but they either put dye in his eyes and then looked for it in his nose or the other way around. (I'm getting old! ) On him the dye never did pass through. When he went in for his neuter the vet attempted to unblock them but he wasn't able to. He's going to have a dental in a couple of months and he's going to try again. If he still can't get them unblocked we're going to take him to an opthamologist. If it were just cosmetic I probably woudn't bother but it does seem to bug him and make him itchy sometimes.

| I wonder if it is the little hairs around her eyes that are growing out. They seems to tear quite a bit. I have tried some many foods without any change...hmmm. Thanks! |

| Is there anyone out there who feed holistic food? Is there much difference than other foods? Thanks! |

| I would think it would be different for different dogs.

| All natural without fillers or by-products. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Thanks, there are several definitions going around, sometimes it means organic, or grown without manmade fertilizers. I’m a little confused what “all natural” means when it comes to dog food, but it sounds like a dog could be just as easily allergic to a holistic food as a regular food. My foster baby is on a food made by Wellness, and the good thing about it is it only has five ingredients, so you can narrow down what the allergens can be. There are no dairy products, no corn, no wheat, no soy, no eggs, no artificial preservatives, no colors and no flavors. It's called Simple Solutions, and I think it can be helpful if you want to find out if an ingredient is bothering your dog. If the allergies go away with this food, you could eventually very slowly and one at a time add more things to the diet. Here's what the manufacturer says: Quote:
It does contain Tomato Pumice which is a byproduct, but I don't think this is a bad ingredient.

| Thank you for all of the great info. I really did like the Wellness Super5mix but it had garlic, which is an iffy ingredient. You are right, who knows what 'all natural' really means! lol. I will do some research on this Simple Solutions, it sounds promising. Thank so much! Quote:

I just think Simple Solutions can be beneficial in helping someone narrow down allergens. I mean you could feed chicken and rice, and gradually add things, but it’s not nutritionally balanced, and it might be hard to get your dog to start eating dog food again. Did you read the site I linked, Tear Staining: The Causes & Cures it has several other cause of tears. If you dog is a puppy, it could be just due to cutting his teeth.

| Tootsy has always had gunk in the corners of her eyes and I have tried to grow out her hair around that area with no success. When it finally gets long enough to tie up, she will spend hours doing her best to get the tie out and eventually she succeeds. Very frustrating. I have also tried gelling back the hair around the eye area, but it doesn't last. I have cut the hair short around her eyes again, but still feel that there is just no real answer for her, as those short hairs can cause problems as well. When I wipe her eyes in the mornings, the cotton pad is pinky brown. Is this the normal colour of their discharge? The first time I did it I nearly freaked as I thought it was blood! As for your question about food, I feed Tootsy all organic homecooked food and she still has eye problems. |

| Garlic has always scared me but moderation is the key. I did read the article. Thanks. I tend to think its allergies because she scratches a bunch. She definitely does not have fleas so that can be ruled out. I will ask the vet next visit if the next food change doesn't help. Her eyes don't seem to bother her, I just don't want it to turn into a yeast infection. thank you so much for your help. It can be very frustrating. Quote:
