| Anal Glands/Licking Butt? Just tonight, within the past three-four hours, Jackson's kind of been licking at his butt. It doesn't look red or irritated at all. He got groomed about a week ago so I don't think it'd be irritation from the buzzer or anything. I don't think this groomer automatically does anal glands, it's extra $$, so I am just wondering if maybe he needs them expressed. His stools have been firm. He hasn't taken any pain meds or antibiotics for a week. We did go to the dog park today and on a few walks, could it be possible that something just irritated him? I felt down there (gross, I know!) but I wouldn't even know what anal glands feel like. I do feel two sac-like things, but not sure if that's normal, or if that's the glands? Anyone know? Should I attempt to empty them myself at home, or is that a no-no? I just watched a few videos lol. But don't really WANT to do it. I am not sure he's ever had his glands expressed before. He's expressed them naturally when he's gotten scared - when he stayed overnight at the hospital, his bum was terrible and smelly. And when they cut his nails, same thing. But other than that, none. He is going to the veterinary dentist tomorrow for a free re-check of his teeth from his dental surgery two weeks ago. But they are a dentist specialist, so I'll feel like an idiot asking about his glands, I am not sure they mess with that kind of stuff or what the protocol is for that. Oh, and it's not like constant licking. It's like about an hour ago, he hopped off the couch and licked his bum for probably five minutes in a row. Two hours before that, same thing, lasted about 3-5 minutes and then he goes back and lays down and acts comfortable.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | I know an older yorkie pro can give you better advice, but I had to say that I noticed Katie Scarlett licking and scooting a lot the other day. I always check her butt and woo woo everyday...yes, I know it's weird, but I'm only doing it to keep a close eye. My husband says I'm overprotective, but hey, if you don't look, how will you know? LOL. So I checked out her butt and noticed how swollen it was. I had read many things on expressing the anal glands and called my vet to talk to the vet tech there. She is so nice and said it was perfectly alright for me to express them myself, but if I did not want to, I could bring her in for them to do it. But I decided to give it a go myself. I double checked what I read and got down to business. I cleaned her butt really good with a wipe, even though it wasn't that dirty. And I just lightly pushed on them a tad and noticed a little fluid coming out, so that told me that they were probably needing expressed. So I got a paper towel like I had read to 'catch' any fluid. I had heard so many stories on how it can go a distance. Well watch out! It can propel a lot further than you think! LOL. I know it is gross, but a beginners mistake, I did not hold the paper towel close enough and when I squeezed, to put it a nice way, I made a mess! It even got in my hair! I was about to throw up! I finished, picked her up and went running into the bedroom to wake up my husband. He works nights and was asleep. I said 'here, please watch her.' I immediately got in the bath and washed my hair like 4 times. Then I got out and went into the man cave where I was doing the job and cleaned up. It didn't make a huge mess, but it all didn't go on the towel either. Sorry to gross you out, but I just wanted to say something because I didn't want it to happen to you. We immediately gave KS a bath after I cleaned up a second time. Since then she is pooping much better and hasn't been paying much attention to her rump. So after it was all over, my husband was rolling in the floor laughing. I guess I can see the humor in my newbie mistake, but believe me....it wasn't funny at the time!

| OMG! I had to laugh at your story, lol. Sounds like something I would do!! Probably something I'll leave to the professionals!! lol. It hasn't bothered him since I made this post. I am just not sure. It doesn't smell or anything... and believe me, I know how awful that smell is!

| If you have a dental recheck tomorrow then go ahead & ask them to check his anals. No need to feel dumb about it as I'm sure they do the anals all of the time & better to be safe then sorry as you deff would not want them to burst. They may still be full & when he scooted, he may have just expressed enough that it took some of the pressure away temporarily. |

| Hair irritation Fleas Allergies Worms Anals Take your pick. lol You can empty them yourself. Really up to you and if your vet is comfortable with it. I do it myself. No way am I paying for somebody to do something I'm capable of doing. If he doesn't do it anymore, then you can stil empty them to be safe, but I'd be leaving them. The vet dentist probably gets this kind of thing sometimes. I would not ask them to do it though, but that's me.

| Lol, lovely choices. It can't be worms, he just had a fecal and it came back clear. Don't think it'd be fleas. Never seen one on him ever before, and he is on Frontline, but I guess it's a possibility. How can you even tell if he has fleas? I did have that Dachshund in my home for a day before I brought him to the rescue place, and they confirmed he had a flea allergy, so I wonder if he had any more fleas on him. Also, my step-mom found one single flea in the bottom of a huge packing box the other day. Otherwise, in three years, we've never had a flea problem. But I keep hearing it's bad this year! The groomer was here last week and did not say anything to me about fleas, but he did have a few tiny red bumps, smaller than pimples, on his belly near his private area. I thought it was just a reaction to the antibiotics or something because they went away as soon as I stopped giving them. Hmmm... now you've got me thinking about fleas. Never dealt with them before. I wonder if I should give him a bath in Dawn soap, just to be safe? He already had his dose of Frontline for the month, which I've been really unhappy with. Didn't see a tick for three months ALL summer when he had only had one dose of Advantix in June and then when I apply the Frontline, he has three big ticks within a week attached to him. They were dead but they were in there and attached, and then found one crawling on a strand of his hair, etc. I am starting to think they are attracted to the Frontline, LOL! Going to have to go back to Advantix, I think.

| I wouldn't give him a Dawn bath unless you confirm it is fleas. It could dry him out and make him more irritated. Probably isn't, but possible. I'd be going over him very carefully. They sometimes like to congregate around the butt, so it's always a question when they are itchy back there. Has be been scratching anywhere else lately? Usually if you find one flea, there are more close by.....

| He's been scratching a BIT more than normal, but not obsessively or anything. I attributed it to the antibiotics (like I said, he had tiny red bumps near his private area that went away two days after antibiotics stopped). He's also been on a new food, but I didn't think that was the cause. He's on his second bag. I thought environmental would be more likely. It has been unusually warm here for the time of year (65-70 every day for the past four-five days) and my head has been a bit stuffy and eyes a bit itchy. Though he's never seemed to have suffered from allergies in the past.... Just checked him all over and don't see any fleas or anything. His hair is really short right now too and I combed using my fingers upwards, so the opposite way the hair grows, and I couldn't find anything. Maybe I'll just try giving him a regular bath tonight and see if it helps anything. The vet also combed upward near his back end three weeks ago at his yearly (and this was after that Dachshund was here) and did not find anything. So who knows, lol. Maybe he just had an itchy bum. Or maybe it IS still irritated from the groomers.
