I know an older yorkie pro can give you better advice, but I had to say that I noticed Katie Scarlett licking and scooting a lot the other day. I always check her butt and woo woo everyday...yes, I know it's weird, but I'm only doing it to keep a close eye. My husband says I'm overprotective, but hey, if you don't look, how will you know? LOL. So I checked out her butt and noticed how swollen it was. I had read many things on expressing the anal glands and called my vet to talk to the vet tech there. She is so nice and said it was perfectly alright for me to express them myself, but if I did not want to, I could bring her in for them to do it. But I decided to give it a go myself. I double checked what I read and got down to business. I cleaned her butt really good with a wipe, even though it wasn't that dirty. And I just lightly pushed on them a tad and noticed a little fluid coming out, so that told me that they were probably needing expressed. So I got a paper towel like I had read to 'catch' any fluid. I had heard so many stories on how it can go a distance. Well watch out! It can propel a lot further than you think! LOL. I know it is gross, but a beginners mistake, I did not hold the paper towel close enough and when I squeezed, to put it a nice way, I made a mess! It even got in my hair! I was about to throw up! I finished, picked her up and went running into the bedroom to wake up my husband. He works nights and was asleep. I said 'here, please watch her.' I immediately got in the bath and washed my hair like 4 times. Then I got out and went into the man cave where I was doing the job and cleaned up. It didn't make a huge mess, but it all didn't go on the towel either. Sorry to gross you out, but I just wanted to say something because I didn't want it to happen to you. We immediately gave KS a bath after I cleaned up a second time. Since then she is pooping much better and hasn't been paying much attention to her rump.
So after it was all over, my husband was rolling in the floor laughing. I guess I can see the humor in my newbie mistake, but believe me....it wasn't funny at the time!
