| New Puppy tested positive for Luxating Patella, Please HELP! :) Hi YTers I have a little bit of a dilema. I went to visit a show breeder who had a male Biewer yorkie she wanted to place in a pet home. When I had first inquired about the puppy she had been very upfront right away in telling me the reason why she is placing him in a pet home, and not keeping him for showing and breeding, is because he tested positive for Luxating Patella in his genetic screening. I still went out to see the puppy because she was not that far from me, and in my 6 months of research, I hadn't found a breeder that was local enough to go "check things out" and actually hold and play with a new puppy. OMG why did I fall in love with this little guy??? He is sooo sweet, he just nuzzled me the whole time. WHen I put him down, he just ran inbetween my feet and wanted to play on them. I felt like we instantly bonded! I also got to see the mother and she was just a doll, very mild mannered and absolutely stunning. Now I am torn! Does anyone here on YT have a yorkie or biewer with LP? I have already purchased furniture stairs. The breeder says hes Grade 1 and that he is not in any pain nor does it affect his walking or playing. She said there is a small possibility he may need surgery when he is older, I don't have a problem dealing with this but what do you all think? PLEASE help, I am thinking of placing a deposit today.... |

| Bless your heart. I don't know anything about this but I know you will get some good advice here on YT.

| Since you want an adorable, loving, pet, I say go for it. I commend your breeder for their honesty and for trying to place this beautiful puppy in the right home. It is poss. that someday this little guy may need surgery. But this is not a life threating problem. As a breeder I try to assure that every puppy is in perfect health when I send them to a forever home. But,I am not God, I do not know what will happen tomorrow. I have never had a puppy returned or had anyone ask for a refund. I guarantee my puppies for a year. We can only do so much with a living being and I think your breeder has done everything they can to raise healthy happy puppies. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | If it were me and I felt the puppy was perfect except for the mild LP I would do it. I have 4 and they all have some degree of LP. Only one has needed surgery and I felt maybe I could have gotten by with out it if I had waited and tried more conservative methods. My 18 year old has it and he does just fine. As long as you know up front and are prepared to have the surgery IF it is ever necessary and try and limit jumping I would get him. I use ramps and stairs and train them from day one to use them rather than jump.

| I'd go for it, and give him the best possible care to help prevent further damage to his knee. Knowing ahead of time, you can start a little savings account "just in case" surgery is needed some day. Hopefully you won't ever need it.

| I'd go for it. Our Maggie has grade 3 LP in both rear legs and it has only bothered her once. She still runs and plays like normal. The vet said we can consider surgery if it continues to bother her. If this pup only has grade 1 LP, it will probably never be an issue for you. Knowing he has it, you can keep an eye on it and your vet can monitor it. LP is very common and many, many dogs live happy active lives with it. |

| I agree with the others who said that you know about it now and if you are willing to plan for it in case it becomes an issue later then it sounds like you have found your furbaby. On the other hand, if you don't think this is something you can handle, either financially or mentally, then you should definitely acknowledge that and do the right thing for the pup and step away now. My best advice is to looks at the facts and, as hard as it is, not let the joy of a new puppy cloud your decision. I wish you the best of luck and let us know what you decide.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Grade 1 LP is minimal. And knowing ahead of time it will allow you to have savings in case you need to do a surgery. Enjoy the puppy and be sure and post pictures when you get your new puppy. |

| Gr 1 is nothing to worry about. Be glad your breeder was upfront about it with you. Uni was initially diagnosed with gr 3, then downgraded to 2. We have her on glucosamine supplements and it helps. We use Cosequin. Now the supplements don't cure the problem. It just helps with the joints to give more "juice" and help keep arthritis at bay. If it were me, I'd get the puppy in a heartbeat.

My yorkie has between grade 3-4 LP in both knees. Like Capt Noonie, my boy takes supplements, and we try very hard to keep his weight down. Easier said than done since I have a porkie yorkie. He loves to eat!

| You guys are amazing, thank you so much for the encouraging words! I am so glad to be a part of YT, I wish I would have known about this place before. Thank you again for easing my mind. But, unfortunately after Googleing her kennel name (another thing I learned from YT), I have changed my mind. So, the search still continues. |
