| Second opinion on yorkie's diet, please? Hey guys, first post. I just want some second (third technically) opinions on something. ^^ My yorkie, Elliot, just got back from the vet for his rabies vaccine. When my mom informed the vet that we were only feeding him two times a day, he told us we should be feeding him three times a day until he reached six-months. This confused us because when we got Elliot, a woman from the store told us he was only to eat in the morning and evening. The very first vet we took him to told us the same thing. In case this info could be important; he weighs 5.4 lbs and is 4-months-old. Up until now we've been feeding him 1/4 cup of Royal Canin dog food. Should we start feeding him three times a day only in lesser quantities? We're just confused because of the differing opinions. |

| Welcome to YT. I personally believe in the free feeding method when feeding kibble. I rather give my animals the ability to eat when they are hungry. Their nutritional requirements are high at this young age, especially if your little one is very active. I would rather have them eating a little more than normal then eating to little to meet their daily requirements, as this can cause long-term health issues. |

| I agree with the others, 3 times or more a day probably at least until 8 months old. Spread out whatever quantity your pup is eating now into the three meals. My boys are both full grown, but they still require 3 meals a day. They are both really active and fast little systems, especially Teddy. If they go too long without food, they throw up yellow bile.

| When Bailey was a pup - she ate twice a day, but I kept kibble available at all times.

He is a really hyper pup, but the thing is, he wants to eat all the time. I think I have to draw a line with him. Reading all the comments, I'll start feeding him three times a day. The portions that we give him are already higher than recommended, so I think I'll leave it at that. His anxiety to eat all the time (and his desperation when he spots that one of us has finally taken out the bag of dog food to feed him) was starting to make me worry we weren't feeding him enough, so I hope this new diet will get rid of that a bit. I'll see how it goes. Thanks again. | |

I feed my 3# Sugar 1/4 of a cup to almost 1/2 a cup per day depending on her activity level. If your pup is over 5 # and GROWING, you may want to increase this amount. Especially if it is the case(like it sounds) that he has been eating this same amount for a while now. Maybe supplement by adding fresh cooked veggies to his food. Or raw carrots or apple bits as a snack. I think most breeders would agree that you should free feed until a year old at least. He really does sound hungry to me from what you describe.

| Recently my yorkie and my shorkie had diarrhea problems so I was giving them chicken rice and sweet potato which they loved. The vet said not to give them canned dog food. Now that the problem is cleared up I can't get them back on dog food again. I've tried everything. I've tried adding the canned dog food slowly a little at a time but that doesn't work. I've tried almost every dog food on the market but expensive and cheap but they eat the chicken and rice and leave the dog food even when I mix it all up so they can't pick it out. I'm at my wit's end. I'm going to talk to the vet on Saturday and see if she has any ideas in the meantime I've been giving them just boiled chicken rice and sweet potato. I've also been giving them vitimin suppliments. |

Gradually , I was able to get her to eat Wellness kibble like the rest of my dogs. Part of the reason she was having a hard time eating was that she had constipation, very hard stools. She is fine now, but it took a while. Tey to find a food that they really enjoy , "dog food" and mix it up very well , with the chicken , so they can't just pick out the chicken and eat that. I also added a little bit of vegies . She also liked her food warmed up .

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I agree!!! They need to be eating 3 times a day with a few treat through out the day and right before they go to bed.. They have such litle tummies.. the last thing you want is your babies blood sugar to drop..
