Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() ![]() They use Isoflurane gas anesthetic throughout the surgery I'm informed. They informed me that they inject the dog prior to being discharged with Rimadyl and Hydormorphine (Opioy), I hope I spelled that right! My question is the discharge injections safe, has anyone heard of these shots? At the same time, Princess was found to have a grade 2 malocclusion in the manible lower jaw . I have an appointment with a veterinary dentist Tues. 2/8. The tooth is just starting to come out, and she still has a few baby teeth. My SPCA vet. suggested that if there has to be any extractions I should have them perform the spaying as well. ![]() I will have more info I guess on Tuesday when I see the vet. dentist. In the meantime, I would like to know if any has heard anything about the injections. Thank you all so much, Naomi- Princess Chloe's Mami ![]() Last edited by Baby Princess; 02-05-2011 at 11:40 AM. |

| ![]() I do not know anything about the injections themselves although I know mine have gotten an injection for pain prior to going home.. so that is probably what it is. I think because your puppy is so tiny that I might be inclined to take their advice about having the vet perform the spay at the same time as the dental. It may cost more, but I would be more concerned about the vet having the proper equipment there in case there IS a problem and also about putting her under the anesthetic two times. I would also recommend that pre-OP bloodwork be done prior to either surgery. I think it is extremely important because the results could tell if there is likely to be a problem (although, it doesn't often happen, sometimes there could be a problem even if the bloodwork is good).

Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() Thank you Sunnie for such a quick reply! I was thinking the same thing of having the two procedures done at once. I had the vet do a full blood work on Princess Chloe to have on record her results as of now. I'll have more info after she sees her vet. dentist next week. I'm a bit nervous, she's so small and all this of injections with deramaxx and Iso anesthesia have me concerned. ![]() Naomi, Princess Chloe's Mami |

| ![]() They wouldn't be giving Deramaxx and Rimadyl. It would have to be one or the other really. Pain meds aren't exactly the safest thing in the world, but with a spay they should have it. If you trust the vet, then I'd go with their recommendation the pain drugs used. Rimadyl does have some concerning history (which you'll see if you Google it), but it is still generally considered safe. She should also come home with pain meds. There would be a question about the induction drug used. Low cost places are more likely to use something cheaper which wouldn't be as safe. Propofol is a very good one.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() Personally if it were my dog I would elect to have the teeth pulled at the same time as the spay. I would also ask that they give an injection of Metacam IV instead of Rimadyl and have her go home with oral Metacam instead of oral Rimadyl. I prefer metacam to rimadyl in small breeds. I would also make sure they are giving IV fluids during and after the surgery, especially since she is small. Lastly I would ask that they not give the hydro shot before going home. It can have a powerful sedative effect and I wouldn't want her going home like that.

Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() Kellie & Crystal, thank you both so much for your replies. I will do somemore research as you both suggested. I will look up the Metacam on google, in the meantime if Princess needs to have some teeth pulled I will have her spayed at the time. We see the vet. dentist on Tuesday for the evaluation of her malocclusion and by then I'll have the big picture. Thanks again for your replies. Naomi & Princess Chloe ![]() |

| ![]() I also prefer metacam for small breeds....but your vet may be set on giving rimadyl. If they have both in stock, then I'd ask for the metacam.

Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() Thank you all for your replies. I spoke to the SPCA Spay clinic and they gave me some more information regarding the injections. I told them since I will have to sign a waiver concerning this matter that I needed more info. so that when I sit down with them I can make an informed decision. I've been researching the adv. and disadvantages of Metacam vs Rimadyl. Today I took Princess Chloe to the dentist and the vet. dentist said that she didn't see any malocclusions in her teeth she still has almost all her baby teeth with exception of her upper front ones. I'm so glad the SPCA sent me to this vet. dentist, it just goes to show you that they didn't know about Yorkies teeth. We have a follow up appointment for March 22nd, to see what the status of Princess Chloe's teeth is. Thank God, I was really concerned that I would have to put Princess thru a second round of anesthesia. Thanks again for your replies. Naomi & Princess Chloe ![]() |
