Senior Yorkie Talker | Spaying and tooth removal Hi Everyone! I just got my new puppy 3 days ago, her name is Princess Cloe and she is 2lb 14oz and 5 months old. Today I took her to the vet. for a general check up and to check her blood for hypoglycemia since she all of a sudden stopped eating. Every thing turned out well she's okay. I asked my new vet. about spaying her at 7 months since she still has her baby teeth and I would like to see if her adult teeth come in right. Her response was very strange to me since she preferred to have Princess spayed even before her adult teeth came out. I'm concerned about the anaesthesia and would prefer to wait until her adult teeth came out should she need to have surgery for them, and have the two procedures performed at the same time. Am I wrong to think this? Also, she said that we needed to give Princess her rabies shot soon. I thought the rabies shot was given at 1 year of age? Can anyone help me understand this all, she's my first puppy in many years and I don't want to be overly concerned, but she's now my baby! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Congratulations on your new Princess! I don't know why your vet would advise two separate surgeries, instead of spaying and retained baby teeth removal being done at the same time It only makes sense to do both, and have to put her under anesthetic the one time. I would insist both procedures be done on the same day, and if the vet refused I would find another vet. Below are some links about current vaccine protocols. But, your vet is right, typically rabies is given around 6 months of age. Please do read though, because it's also important to know vaccines should not be given all at the same time in the future. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overview.html Dr-Dodds-ChangingVaccProtocol Also before her spay/teeth removal have pre-op bloodwork done. The bloodwork results can be an indicator of any issues to be aware of before being placed under anesthetic.

| The only logical explanation I can come up with is that your vet is worried your girl will go into heat before it's time to remove the remaining baby teeth, but your concern seems very well-warranted to me! My vet has always advised to avoid general anesthesia whenever possible because of the risks (anesthesia is usually the riskiest part of surgery, for humans and dogs) and to lump procedures together whenever possible. I think your instincts are right and you should maybe get a second opinion. Also, as recommended above, make sure pre-op blood work is done, just to make sure there are no issues.

I waited too long and my little one went into heat. The vet said I should wait few weeks after heat..

| My vet told me that he does an x-ray before he takes out any teeth. He could see what was there and even told me that Ally was missing a few big-girl teeth. This would mean that you would not have to wait for all the teeth to pop out. I did wait until Ally was almost 8 months and she had 13 removed. Her vet does dental work too though. |

| If you are not totally comfortable with your new vet, is it possible to find another that you would be comfortable with? Both of mine had their baby teeth done when they were neutered and spayed. I didn't want to put them under for a 2nd time. Hot Rod had double row of teeth and Maggie only needed 4 or 5 removed. You need to be comfortable with the care and advice from your vet. Best of luck and congrats on you little princess.

| I agree that if you're not comfortable with your current vet, I would look for a new one. I watied til Lulu was about 8 months old before spaying her. One reason was her small size (just over 3 lbs) & the other reason was to give her baby teeth time to fall out on their own. I wanted her spayed prior to her first heat due to the health benefits but I wanted to wait until she was 7-8 months. All went well & she had no baby teeth retained.
