| Benefits of neutering? Hey everyone, I'm getting Oliver neutered next week and I just have a couple questions/concerns: 1) Is 8 months old later than usual to be getting him neutered, I was told he should have had it done at 6 months? 2) Is this going to change his personality or his behavior in any way? 3) How long is the recovery process? This is my first puppy so I just want to make sure I cover all my bases...I know the vet will keep him all day and over night on the day of surgery but should I take off work the following day and take care of him? I'm not sure how they even do the procedure or if stiches are involved. Any advice would be so helpful thanks! I'm such a worry wort!!

As far as personality or behavior changes, my two boys haven't shown any change at all. The recovery process is very quick! The first couple of days should be quiet, but your boy will let you know his limit, believe me! Also--VERY IMPORTANT--get his pre-op bloodwork done prior. It could save his life!!! | |

| 1. It's a little bit later than usual but I don't think it's ever "too late" and a lot of people actually recommend waiting as long as you can to let all the growth plates close. 2. No, neutering does not change a dogs personality. It could make them a little calmer, less aggressive, stop or prevent marking habits, prevent unwanted pregnancies, most unaltered males WILL find a way to get to a female in heat, they can smell it from miles away. I believe 80% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered males, so it can cause less running away. 3. Jackson was back to 100% normal on day 3. By day 2 though, he was feeling nearly all better.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Great replies! The vet said I could keep Joey overnight, but no one would be there to watch him so I saw no benefit in this. I guess vets want to make sure that they are not over stimulated. I'd check with the vet and see if someone will be there, otherwise, it might be safer to bring him home as long as you can keep him quiet. Also, some vets don't know that yorkies don't lose all their teeth on their own, so make sure he'll pull any remaining baby teeth, and this is also a good time for microchipping if you are thinking about doing that. Joey seemed fine after a couple of days, it's easier with males. Best of luck!

| My neutered boys are still active, playful, and feisty. They both recovered very quickly, but I had to discourage Max was jumping for two weeks. I also wouldn't let him go on long daily walks during that time. Instead, I carried him and eased him back into it. Another advantage to having waited until 8 months is that your baby's growth plates in his bones are more likely to have closed. Teddy was a little over 7 months when he was neutered. We haven't had any trouble with marking. ETA: I see Brit already mentioned the growth plates |

| I agree and I threatened my vet that I would stand outside all night and risk arrest if she didn't give me Max before closing time. Luckily the vet techs were on my side and Max screamed his way out of there by early afternoon. He wanted to get home to his piddle pad. |

| I agree with verifying that someone will be there overnight with him. Most do not have someone there. I brought Lulu home with me the same night as her surgery (Tuesday). Usually they keep the babies overnight, but since Lulu was so small & I requested to bring her home they allowed me to do so. They did keep her all day until closing time, though. But that was okay with me b/c she was getting IV fluids the whole time & was resting. Good luck! I know it's stressful. I am beyond relieved that Lulu's spay is over with.

| Duke was around 10 months when I got him neutered, wanted to do it earlier as everyone rec'd 6 months but was not able to. I think it was fine still. He took a few short days before he was back to his active self. I don't think his personality changed at all. He still lift his leg when he pees on the pad or outside . He also still hump his stuff animal girlfriend but I heard that it's ok that he does that. Duke also got his chip the same day too and I was able to bring him home with me later that day. I would say that someone should be with him all day for the first few days to monitor him especially with the cone around their neck. Good luck.

| I think I can beat all who have posted so far. Kaji was neutered 5 days after his first brithday, so he was a full fledged marker by then! He is still the sweet natured boy I was promised, and the only change in behavior that I've noticed is he isn't as interested in marking inside the house. Then again, I was right on top of him until he got the message.

2. His behavior has not changed in any way whatsoever. 3. Recovery time varies. When I went back to pick Raley up I thought (from what I had read so many times) that he was going to be in a lot of pain, etc....Well, he came walking out wagging his tail like nothing had happened!! We had a 4 yr old female spayed at the same time....the only time during the recovery of Raley that I could tell he was uncomfortable was when he would try and play with her. He was a little cautious. He never licked his stitches, etc...NO CONE needed! I gave him motrin the first night he was home at bedtime. Other than that we had absolutely no problems! Prior to being neutured he never lifted his leg to pee and still doesn't! He just turned a year old and to this day has not lifted his leg or marked on anything! I did allow both of my furbabies to stay at the vet overnight. I did make sure someone would be checking on them, though. In fact, the vet himself is the one who did the checking! Good luck! I was a basket case prior to the surgery but I do not regret it at all!!

| If you are getting him neutered, do him and yourself a favor, and make sure that they do a laser procedure. If the vet has not suggested it, ask him about it. I was only charged about $50 more for having the procedure.I have had it done both ways and the scapel incisions take a lot longer to heal and there is more inflammation: both internal and external. Bra'Tac,our newest, had laser and never licked the area and was up and about the next day, as if nothing had happened. If I would have known about this procedure for our 1st pup, it would have saved him a lot of undue pain. Just a thought... |
