I suppose we will try broccoli next. We've done pineapple, spinach, meat tenderizer and Dis-Taste treats. We are not giving up.

Default Same poo, different day

I have a 13-month-old Yorkie who started doing this around 5-6 months of age. We were feeding Innova puppy kibble on a schedule. I tried Forbid, then fresh pineapple (several whole pineapples, in consistent pieces as also suggested here), and then immediately putting hot sauce on it. She basically laughed at Forbid, and kept on eating the poop. She eventually ate the pineapple...and kept eating the poop. The hot sauce was even only a mild deterrent. Finally I opted to keep her confined to her ex-pen until she used the potty before/after meals. We quickly cleaned it up, and followed it with a treat. She ran from the poop to get the treat from us. Eventually, I was able to leave her pen with the potty open and she'd do her business and still run to us for the treat. I thought we had this habit kicked last fall.

Today, she started again. Argh. She's quite regular, and someone is almost always home to do a quick clean up. We just can't always catch her the second she goes. I also don't want to have to leave her in her crate every time we leave.

I will now try pumpkin and spinach. Not necessarily in that order.

If these are grown dogs eating poop, would a temporary muzzle work when its poop time? If Tibbe ever started doing that, I think I might try that as he poops pretty much on schedule so I pretty much know when he's due.

KAREN-Your post have me in tears DH keeps asking what is so funny.

I know its NOT funny...Dex is now dabbling in this nasty issue
It's just been in the last few weeks that I've noticed. It's usually when he's in his crate, we'll come in and find a tiny piece left....Thinking, "wow, small, rabbit like terds", then putting two and two together, seeing what he does outside when we're watching him and realizing ...little man is feasting on his own poo

ahhhhhhhhhhh, sigh, I'm going to try pumpkin.

LOL you too??!!!

Max will leap high buildings to get to his poop. He is trained to "leave it" when I'm around, and I'm around 90% of the time. I'm hoping he'll grow out of it soon as his other eating habits have recently changed.

Default Not sure if the pumpkin worked completely

So, I've been using the pumpkin with my girl (1 year, 3 months old) for just about two months now. I don't see her hurrying to pick up the poop now. However, I'm not sure if she'll continue this good behavior if we're not around. There is almost always someone home to clean up and give her a treat right after she goes. She loves that incentive, but it didn't stop her from going back to the poop before.

When we were having the problem in February, I opted to go back to crating her at night so we could watch her and be aware of when she was going. So, we haven't had lots of time when she's alone to see if she would. I really don't want to deal with this part of dog raising at all. So, I am now kind of nervous about leaving her out of the crate at night, or leaving her uncrated when we run errands. If she started the poop eating habit again, I might lose my mind.

Everything else is going quite well.

Thoughts from anyone who has been there, done that, and overcome the problem by using pumpkin?

Thanks much. This forum has been quite helpful.

I stopped giving her the pumpkin, and within 4 days, she was eating poop again. Argh!

I went to my local pet store to get Solid Gold S.E.P.. An employee who'd helped me previously with this issue said she was surprised that the habit was still there, after forbid, pineapple, and the pumpkin. She asked what I was feeding her (Innova Evo turkey and chicken small bites), and suggested I try a new food before the S.E.P. She kindly gave me some samples of Solid Gold just a Wee Bit (I bought the S.E.P., just in case). There was no poop eating while trialing the samples, so I went back and picked up a bag. There have now been two weeks of no poop eating. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is IT.

That's pretty interesting. My Max still has the problem. Both my dogs eat the same food and I would hate to change food because the non-poop eater's tummy doesn't always agree with menu changes.

Yeah, it makes sense to me in that all dogs (like people) are not alike. At the same time, it is frustrating! Michiko can be picky about her treats, so I was thrilled to see her take to the new food and have no tummy upset.

Maybe you too could see if you could get some food samples? I got a week's worth. I know I wouldn't have purchased an entire bag of the new food for Michiko if I wasn't certain that it would agree with her tummy.

If nothing else seems to work, I hope Max grows out of it!

One of the major causes of poop eating is undigested protein left in the feces. If a dog smells protein, he'll eat it. This is the reason, certain treatments work; they have enzymes which help digest the protein, so that there is no undigested protein in the poop. Some dog food use poor quality protein that is hard for dogs to digest. While you can trying adding pineapple which “tenderizes” the protein, my first choice would be to change foods.

My very young pup (16 weeks), Merry, has done this for a while much to our dismay and we were totally freaked out. I've come here for help and wonder how much pineapple juice you'd a puppy that is probably 1 pound? I feed her "Taste of the Wild" and she eats frequently. I have another Yorkie that has to eat a different (low calorie) diet, so I have to separate them when they eat. She gets her food in a little enclosure in the kitchen, so I know she getting enough. Please advise, as this worries me about her and she seems to enjoy it. Before I can clean it up it is already down the hatch!?
