Default Small precious Nella has bad teeth

Our little 4 lb - 5 yr old Penelope has bad teeth. Here's the facts:
~ just 2 months after a vet cleaning her teeth are just as bad as before
~ had 2 teeth removed and I just learned she has 2 more loose
~ eats an all natural salmon/sweet potato w/o wheat (allergy to wheat and chicken)
~ loves bully sticks and that's all she chews on
~ temperament - very nervous little girl. We adore her and she adores us when she's not afraid of us or snubbing us. Since I'm her mom and groom, clip nails (not too often).... she's almost always afraid of me. My daughter though, who is her 2nd mom and loves on her w/o the care responsibility, gets unconditional love. I've resorted to giving her a small holistic calming treat for her occasional snack (like after grooming) and it does calm her a bit.
All that to say, brushing her teeth is out of the question..... I tried it but she would have nothing to do with me afterward... for days.
~ can't give her normal dental chews because she throws up bile afterwards. She does that for most healthy dog chews.
I am looking for a means to control her tartar without terrorizing her. At her young age and with such bad teeth (from her dad's side) I'm really concerned for the long-term health of our little girl.
Suzie's Tartar Control? Proden Plaqueoff? other suggestions?
I appreciate any recommendations you have. Thanks, Terlyn

I am interested as well. When I got Sophie a year ago she was 18 months old with very bad teeth. The smell from her mouth was horrendous. She was spayed had a dental cleaning and had a few beby teeth removed. Needless she is not a big fan of having her teeth brushed. She will tolerate the back teeth being brushed but will absoultely not let me near the front teeth. I brush the back teeth and use petzlife. I may have not been a religious as I should have been, obviously wasn't, because she now has plaque. I am hoping with the daily routine the plaque will come off, if not it will be back in for another cleaning. Hate to sedate her though.

unfortunately, nothing will replace brushing. so you will have to work with her on brushing her teeth. that said. there are products that i would recommend. i use proden plaque off, petzlife gel, CET dental chews and sea Jerky Squares Dental Treats.

for brushing her teeth, use a small tooth brush or even just a q-tip to start with. put the enzyme tooth paste on it, let her sniff it and lick it off. i think all the dogs like the taste of the tooth paste. start with letting her lick it off or the tooth brush or q-tips. then start cleaning just one tooth a day and gradually clean more, make sure it's gradual so she doesn't hate it. milu doesn't like her teeth brushed, but she tolerates it. (still struggles though of course) but i try to clean her teeth a couple times a day if i can, so that her whole mouth gets brushed.

good luck!

If I brush Nella's teeth daily or every other day, I may as well kiss my relationship with her goodbye. She is a wary dog, and literally backs away from me more than she comes to me. Mind you, she's trained...... come, sit, stay.... but she's just so anxious that she's suspicious of all my motives. The only time she responds without suspicion is when I get up in the morn, arrive home from an outing or am going to bed. Other than that, I have to woo her to trust me.
In fact, the owner of her mom lives in our granny flat and is shocked each time she sees her behavior. Perhaps the issue here is an anti-anxiety medication? At least that way I can do her hygiene and care so her life will be healthy and long.
Note, in her first 6 months of life I spent many hours holding, whispering, touching her, practice grooming, exposing her to other dogs..... yet, she's still is wary.

I use PEtzlife Oral Gel. This product comes in a spray form or a gel form a and it comes in Peppermint or Salmon flavor. If I recall, the instructions are once a day everyday for the first week, then a couple times a week. No eating or drinking 30 mins before or after application.

It is excellent for removing tartar. And if she is not fond of brushing, just put some on your finger and smear it on her teeth. Their natural tongue action due to the gel (or spray) will move the product around to the other teeth.

My PetSmart started carrying this. Otherwise, you can purchase it online from many different stores.

It does have a bit of a price tag, but it lasts forever. I have three dogs and I brush every other day. My bottle has lasted over a year. I'm just getting ready to open my second bottle.

Oh...thought of one more thing...
For those whose dogs don't like the toothbrush. Start off by giving her/him the toothbrush to play with. Sometimes chewing on the toothbrush as a toy takes away the struggle when you do try and brush their teeth.

Just a thought... Good luck!

Thanks, KJlive! I'll try Petsmart. I think I'll just have to give in and start "terrorizing" her with daily or 3 x wk teeth cleanings. Poor girl. The thought that she won't like me even more just has to be a reality. For example: she had her hair done 2 days ago and still she won't come near me except when I return from an outing. Hmmm...
She's only 5 and already she' lost 2 teeth and has 2 more on the way, and all that will a great diet and bully sticks!
Blessings, Terlyn

well, i wouldn't want to scare her. you just have to be really patient and start with maybe just one tooth at a time. baby steps.

i would also use all the products, since i think every little bit helps. i use petz life gel at night or first thing in the morning. i sprinkle proden plaque off on their food everyday. i give her the dental treat after nail clipping or teeth brushing. i try to brush their teeth a little bit here and there throughout the day.

good luck to you. just be very patient. (it hard!) and hopefully your little girl will also learn to tolerate it maybe even like it!!!

I guess I am a bad mommy. I tackle my dogs and brush their teeth. ONE absolutely dispises it and fights me the entire time, one hates it and fights me, and the other doesn't really like it, but lets me do it without too much trouble.

lol. no, you are a good mommy. they HAVE to have their teeth brushed! milu fights me too, but i have to do it. it's for her health. i feel bad to do something that she doesn't like, but i feel better about it now, and she also learns to tolerate it better now.

Thanks, mkbartz and yorkiepuppy,
I really appreciate the advice!
About Nellie's teethbrushing, it's not that I can't. I can. She knows
I'm the master and she's my little girl. She submissively lets me clip her nails... the problem is after I do any care to her, she doesn't like me for days or weeks..... Recently, in hopes that i could help her not be afraid of me, I recently stopped trimming her hair and let it grow, with only an occasional brushing. Well, I actually got some positive responses from her as though she wasn't quite as afraid that I would groom her.
So, the problem is that she DOES NOT like me to groom her in any fashion.
I can do it and I do - do it. But I pay all the time.
So, when I tried brushing her teeth last time she decided I was not longer safe at all and would have nothing to do with me, ever.
That's my problem and that's why I'm starting to think I should put her on anti-anxiety meds. Sounds a bit extreme to me, but do some dogs possibly need them? Thanks, everyone.

with grooming and nail clipping, you have the option of taking her to the groomer so you dont have to do it yourself (so she won't be afraid of you) but with brushing teeth. i don't think you can have someone else do it. i used to have milu's groomer brush milu's teeth, but they do a pathetic job. plus it's not enough to just have their teeth brushed once a month or anything like that.

make sure your little girl doesn't have any medical problems that's making her behave the way she does. if she is perfectly healthy, i would consider anti-anxiety meds.

the next product i am going to add to our routine is C.E.T. AquaDent. i saw good reviews online for this product. so i am going to try.

don't give up. i really thought i couldn't brush milu's teeth either. but then one day i made up my mind that i must do it. so i just started trying, and i was amazed that she would let me.

i understand your pain though because milu fights me so much when i try to clip her nails that i just dont feel like i can do it myself, i had to take her to the groomers. and two groomers had to work together to cut a 3lb dog's nails. lol.

i understand how you feel about not wanting to scare her. i don't want milu to dislike me either, but i still really want to be able to groom her myself. so i am trying different things. i bought the dremel thingy for her nails. i am going to try that next. and i only cut one nail a day. anymore than that will just be impossible and she will hate me for it too. so i understand where you are coming from. i feel bad, but i don't see any other ways around it especially with teeth.

Thanks, Yorkiepuppie,
Ahh........ that may be it. I'll just have to pay for a groomer... ouch!.......
and resign myself to be her dental assistant. But the anti- anxiety meds sure
do sound promising too. So, I will do that. I will buy some of the dental care products your recommended, then budget for her groomer fees, and look farther into anti-anxiety meds. I've tried a few with small results but will keep looking.
Thanks everyone. This YorkieTalk forum is amazing. Such a blessing.
I'll definitely be back! May God bless you.
