Since starting this thread, the rabbit population around here has never been as great as it was that year, and I haven't noticed those flies, but I do keep an eye out for them each spring and summer.

| ![]() Now I am confused. I was told by my vet that bunnies carry FLEAS not flies. We also have a large rabbit population in my area and I changed my heartworm prevention to Sentinel to help fleas that the rabbit might carry. Do you not use a HW preventative? As for the water supply, I don't understand how you are saying that using a pesticide would contaminate the Chesapeake Bay. The amount of pesticide that you would need to use comparatively to contamination of such a large body of water would be an eye dropper. Furthermore, there are many private wells in my area and I have spoken with the health department numerous times regarding mosquito control. They use both a brick insecticide as well as fogging to combat mosquitoes and West Nile virus and it was never even mentioned as a cross contamination issue. Additionally, the soil acts as a filter of contaminates. As the water leaches through the soil the pesticide dissipates and is further broken down. A pesticide would need to be carried through the ground and into the water table, then it would been to be carried into the bay. Unless you were dumping truck loads of the stuff directily into the bay I cannot imagine this ever being an issue. In Chicago, we have a mosquito abatement program that sprays all along Lake Michigan as well as retention ponds all over suburban Chicago. Lake Michigan is the water supply of millions of people in the Chicago area and surrounding suburbs. I've never heard this being even a slight concern to cross contamination. Personally, I would be straying my yard to prevent this from happening ever again.

| ![]() Did Peek A Boo have diarrhea or an infection when he had the maggots? I've been reading about fly strike since you posted this and it seems that flies of any kind are only attracted to dogs that are unkempt (e.g. matted) or who have some sort of ailment. What is Fly Strike, also known as Myiasis?

![]() ![]() ![]() and he was never covered in flies. His symptoms appeared after staying with the neighbor and her 3 dogs while we were on vacation. My vet said it was the first case she had seen in a dog...(she had seen it in cats I believe).but maybe I'm remembering it wrong. It was 25+ years ago ![]()

| ![]() This stuff is so dang creepy! This is a little off-topic, but I wanted to share. I watched an episode once of "Monsters Inside Me" and a fly flew into a teen boy's eye. A few weeks later he could barely see & had other symptoms-they found a dang maggot in there! ![]()

That is true but I would never leave my dog with someone I didn't know and trust extremely well! But with that said, I was not there. It's been a LONG time....but during that period we never traveled for more than a weekend because of work schedules. Either way, all I know is that I trusted the person he was left with. And still do. We are still friends today!
