As I live on the water, I am restricted as to what I can use in my yard when it comes to pesticides and fertilizers, as it will eventually find it's way to the Cheaspeake Bay. My dogs are out only 2-3 hours on days I am out working in the yard. The yard is small, and I do check on the dogs frequently as I work, if they not right underfoot. I'll be making bug-suits for them shortly...

He had only been out about an hour that day. The flies lay the eggs on the dog, then the eggs hatch from the heat off the dog's body, and the larvae crawl up the hair till they reach the dog's skin, where they burrow in, and feed and grow. Once I discovered the eggs, I had brought him in and removed as many fly eggs as I could with a flea comb, and then gave him a good bath. I guess I missed one, as that is all it takes.
Since starting this thread, the rabbit population around here has never been as great as it was that year, and I haven't noticed those flies, but I do keep an eye out for them each spring and summer.
