| Inactive puppy I hope I'm putting this in the right area. Me and my wife just got a yorkie last week. He's about 9 weeks old and since we've had him he hasn't been too active. He eats only a little but drinks a lot of water. We called the guy we bought him from and he told us to get some Nuti-Cal for him, which we did, and we started to give him some of that last night. When I take him for walks he's fine, and honestly the most active he becomes is when he wants out from the kitchen (that's where his bed and food is). Once I let him out and we get back from our walks, he just huddles by my feet and goes to sleep. I'm not sure if he's simply homesick or if I may need to take him to the vet (and if I do, do we just take him to the closet one or do we need to call). This is our first puppy so I'm not sure if this is normal, or if there may be something wrong. Thanks for the help. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YT! Have you taken him to the vet since you got him for a wellness check up? If not that's what i would do. what is he eating and how much is he eating? 9 weeks old is still too young to be taken away from his mother. They need to stay until at least 12 weeks old. the problem might be that he is just not used to eating kibble if that is what you are feeding him. also, how much does he weigh? if he's small you need to worry about hypoglycemia since he's not eating well and is lethargic. check his gums and make sure they are nice and pink. you need to make sure he is eating at least 4 times a day because he is so young. also make sure he eats right before bed so he does go hypoglycemic during the night. If he's not eating well the nutrical will help, but you don't want to overload him with it.

| I agree that 9 weeks is a bit young for a Yorkie to be separated from his mom and litter mates. At 9 weeks, my puppies do sleep a lot but they also have very active periods where they play like crazy and then they crash and sleep for a while. Is your baby having active periods and then getting sleepy or is he sleepy all the time? I do agree that you should get a vet check up anyways. This is about the age when I start their first shots too.... |

| At nine weeks your puppy should be very active. Are you giving him the food dry or are you soaking it any? I would recommend soaking the dry food and/or adding a little canned Pedigree puppy food to the dry food. Your puppy is too young to be going on walks. I would wait until he has had all his vaccinations before taking him anywhere other dogs have gone. He need vaccinations but I would not recommend starting his shots until he is feeling better. How are the stools on your puppy? Are they soft or firm? It is possible he could have parasites. That would make him lethargic and have a loss of appetite. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | There should be spurts of active play and sleeping. He is still very young and young puppies sleep a lot. After a walk I would fully expect puppy to be tired and sleep Food wise since he is small don't expect him to eat a great deal at one time...he's small, his tummy is small. I would have food available to him at all times. You would him to eat some quantities off and on to keep his blood sugar up. A dollap of nytrical once in the morning and once in the evening will help.

| That's why they should be kept with mom and litter mates until 12 weeks old. They're better prepared for the transition, and mom sends him on his way with a few doggy etiquette lessons. I really urge you not to walk a nine week old outside. It is your responsibility now to keep him safe and healthy. I'll be back with some useful information posted by one of the more knowledgeable breeders here. Rats! I forgot to check the "quote" box again. This is in response to the OP's last post.

| As others have said, he is really young to be removed from his mom. So you and wife are now replacing his mom and liter mates and yes, he is lonely and wanting to be near you. They are quite needy at this age, and you will notice a big difference in a couple weeks. Good that you are getting the vet checkup soon, and you shouldn't take him outside where other dogs have been until he has completed all his shots, which depending on when he started could be around 16 weeks. Without protection he could easily get parvo and other things.

| Thanks a lot for the responses. We took him to get his shots today and the Vet there said that he's ok. I didn't know however that I shouldn't walk him outside. That being the case, I guess I should just mat train him and wait until he is a bit older to take him out? |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | If you have a backyard that no other animals really use to potty (no stray cats or dogs) then it is safe to outside train him to your own yard. just keep him on a leash in your backyard so he doesn't get into anything he shouldn't
