| I would have your vet show you how to express the anal glands because if you don't do it the correct way you might hurt the glands and your puppy might even need surgery after they get hurt. Please check with your vet or groomer. If you take your puppy to get groomed they should be doing this for you. Only do it every 4 to 6 weeks.

| I was clueless to it as well. A YTer told me to feel under the tail, underneath the anus, if you feel two bulges at the 5 and 7 o'clock positions, then they need to be expressed. However, don't do it yourself. Let your vet show you how. If they are scooting their booty, most likely they need it done. either that or they have poop stuck to their butt.

| I agree... I have my vet do it. It is fairly inexpensive (at least mine is.) Just had an incident last Monday with one of mine. I thought she had ingested something that we didn't see and was having an extremely hard time passing it! She was almost howling as it was stuck half in/out. It was HORRIBLE!! We rushed her to the vet (thank goodness it was Monday and not over the weekend) and it ended up being that her glands needed to be expressed. I was so relieved! Our current pace is about once/twice a year and that's it. This one had been about a year and the other was "scooting" and that's how we knew she needed to go. Good luck! |

| I'm not saying don't do it yourself but if you don't know how to do it have someone do it for you or show you how to do it. I do them myself but I went to grooming school. Like I said if she gets groomed they should be doing that for you. Oh and also you have to have a strong stomach! Lol smell is terrible!!

| Check out this thread for info on how to express anal glands naturally: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ands-food.html Sometimes diet alone is not sufficient and your pup's glands will need to be manually emptied. As others noted above, have an expert do it, otherwise you could cause significant harm. |

| I don't see anything at the 5&7 position. Just right under the tail more like 11 & 1 position. So I shouldn't be concerned that anything is wrong?? |

| What are you seeing at the 11 & 1 position? Swelling, redness, anything else? Does your dog scoot or lick the area? |

| It's not anything like that. He does lick the area sometimes. It sounds like it could be an anal gland. But it's just under his tail and everyone had always said they are at the 5 & 7 position- is this normal? Is this ok? |

| If he's licking his behind, his anal glands are bothering him...take him to the vet to get it checked out. Some vets are willing to show you how to do it. Sometimes, a vet tech does it. It should only be expressed if necessary.

| I've recently noticed for the past couple of days that Cooper has been licking around his tail/anal area. He scooted once as well. The area looks a little bit swollen and red and I suppose it's clear he needs his anal glands expressed. I'm not sure how comfortable I am doing this, since I never have before and I heard if you do it incorrectly it could be worse. He gets them expressed about once every 6 weeks when he gets groomed, and the last time being about 3-4 weeks ago. Can it wait until I can go to the vet on Monday?

I don't want to recommend doing something that you aren't comfortable with. I can tell you that while you should ask your vet if it is dangerous or not (to empty them yourself), I have been told that it is not a risk for an owner to do it and it is not going to hurt them. I suppose it is possible for one to rupture while you are doing it, but it is also possible when a vet does it, so...

| I gave him some frozen green beans, which I read about in another thread. He went to the bathroom about 10 minutes later and now seems a little less swollen. I'll keep an eye on it today and tomorrow.
