If the area is obviously irritated, then you run the risk of rupture and/ro abscess if not taken care of immediately. That said, it isn't an emergency either.
I don't want to recommend doing something that you aren't comfortable with. I can tell you that while you should ask your vet if it is dangerous or not (to empty them yourself), I have been told that it is not a risk for an owner to do it and it is not going to hurt them. I suppose it is possible for one to rupture while you are doing it, but it is also possible when a vet does it, so...
