YT Addict | Jenna back from her dental - poor bub! She is totally wiped out. It wasn't pretty. She lost no less than four teeth, one a canine, one that fell out while they were putting her under. They also had to give her a shot for her periodontal disease. (at only 2-3 years old and her teeth were already ruined!) She is supposed to be on canned food for the next 5-7 days (hard on her stomach, I may just mush up some very lean hamburger and rice for her-no decent chicken at the store) and she has an antibiotic to take and metacam for pain. Dissolving stitches in her jaw seem to be distressing her. They also tried to flush her naso-lacrimal ducts (the most expensive part of the procedure) but her right side wouldn't flush, so we may have to take her back to the veterinary ophthalmologist at the end of the month. We spent no less than $530 today just for this. Yikes on toast! Mostly I feel terrible that her tummy had just been starting to feel better last night, now all the meds they pumped her with (morphine is listed on the bill along with a bunch of others that I don't recognize) are making her look all miserable like she was when she first arrived. I'm a bit angry too, simply because she just looks so sick and the people we got her from couldn't have taken better care of her. Anyway.... *grumble* She's lying down sleeping it off now. So if anyone has any recommendations to make her more comfortable (I have a hot water bottle in her pen with her) I would truly appreciate it! BTW, to top it all off...it's May 5 and it's SNOWING outside. I don't think she's going to enjoy going outdoors to potty, but she hates using her pads. I have to hope she'll use the potty patch out in the arctic entry or I may just be holding her over the toilet when she finally needs to go. She hasn't even wanted any water to drink yet and she hasn't eaten or drank anything since midnight last night. |

| If the canned food isn't settling, you can soak kibble in water and give that (just make sure it's pure mush and don't leave it out for too long...throw leftovers away). The periodontal disease vaccine is new and there are some issues with it. Please research before letting them even give anymore... My girl had nine adult teeth pulled and had periodontal disease, osteomyelitis... She was never given the shot and has done extremely well with homecare (OraVet included). As long as she was getting fluids, it shouldn't be a huge deal if she isn't ready to drink. Are her gums sticky? Should be just fine...

YT Addict | Hogeeze, it wasn't my decision to give the shot, the hubby answered the phone when the vet called and ok'd it without talking to me first. What kind of issues? We've been home three hours at least and she won't even touch her food or water. I am worried because I have to give her antibiotic with food. She's looking at me when I come by and rolling up for belly rubs, but you can see she doesn't feel well. Can Yorkies have beef or chicken bouillon cubes dissolved in water? Or is there too much salt in those? As far as I know, she wasn't given fluids during the treatment, there is no IV shave anywhere on her. Nothing on the treatment bill either. Maybe some plain pedialyte would be a good idea? I should've gotten some baby food for her at the store before we came home. (We're 30 miles outside the nearest town.) |

| I'm sure by this time she is willing to drink, but if not, that would be a concern because it has been over 24 hours. Bouillon isn't good. Baby food with no onion flavoring would be okay. Boneless, skinless chicken breast and rice would be good. Pedialyte would be okay. I would give the metacam with food though... Below is a good read about the vaccine. I just don't agree with the conclusion about it being okay to give. Not saying it doesn't work, just that we are changing the bacterial environment and there are still too many questions. And it was being used while having a conditional licensure. So..... Should I Be Administering Dental Vaccines? | Facebook I'd only consider it in very few cases. Brushing daily with CET and using OraVet is a much better way to go (imo). You can also search YT for info about this vaccine. I think some side effects have been reported here.

YT Addict | Thank you, yes she began eating a little last night, then licked water off my fingers most of the night. She was pretty miserable all night but improved as the day went on today. She's had more to eat and is back to being her wiggly self again. So I think we dodged the bullet here. Needless to say, she's not getting the second round. And I'm pretty upset with my usually good vet. Checking out the links now. Thanks! |
