| Possibly Switching to Wellness Core from Iams Hi, guys! Even though we've had Chloe for almost a year, I'm still learning! We're getting ready to switch her over to adult dog food and so I've been doing my homework on the subject. Unfortunately, we don't have a Petco or PetSmart near our home so we'll have to make a special trip to purchase a new brand of dog food. (For convenience, we've been feeding her Iams puppy food since I can easily get it at Wal-Mart.) Anyway, before I make the drive, I wanted to see what you guys had to say! I think I've just about narrowed it down to either Wellness Core or Blue Buffalo. I'm leaning towards the Wellness because of the price difference. I realize that Chloe should eat less when we're feeding her a higher quality of food, but I do want to keep price in mind because this is a long term commitment! My major concern is with Chloe's coat. Yorkies in general have such beautiful coats and I really want Chloe to have a gorgeous one! For those of you who feed Wellness, did you notice a change in the quality of your dog's coat? Sometimes Chloe's coat seems a little dry and I've noticed a very few flakes in her fur while brushing. Do you think changing food could help this? One other thing I'm concerned with (and forgive the delicate subject matter) is the consistency of her poop. I have to clean up after her outside and it is so easy when her stools are firm. It also seems to greatly cut down on poop getting stuck in her fur. I was curious if a better quality dog food will change that consistency (either for better or worse). I've heard that feeding wet dog food makes the stools more moist and I'd like to avoid that if possible. Any insight is appreciated!!! Thanks so much!! -C

| Magnus is little over 5 months now and have been switched over to Wellness from Iams. I think it's been close to a month and I think his coat is much softer and shinier since the change in food. I'd definitely recommend getting Chloe off Iams. Magnus used to scratch a lot when he was on that. As for poop... I don't mean to gross anyone out but I've picked up his poop when it was out fresh and warm. The stool was soft but not so much where I had any issue picking it up in one scoop. And this is with us feeding him snacks like cucumbers/apples. I think you should contact Wellness and ask them to send you a sample. That's what I did and help me decide on which to switch to. Hope this helps. Good luck! |

| Wellness Core is a great food. However, every food doesnt work for every dog... you may want to consider ordering some samples online before you make the drive... Chloe may turn her nose up at the food, or it may just not agree with her... you just never know until you get the food in front of them. Changing over from IAMS I am sure you will notice a HUGE difference in her coat. Good Luck and Kudos on taking the time to find the best for your little one

We have changed food though several times. They would get bored, stop eating it and we would have to try something else. We have had the most success with the Nature's Variety that we use now. We love they have different formulas that we rotate, they don't get sick of it that way!

| So far, we've been incredibly lucky with Chloe as far as appetite goes. This dog will eat anything you put in front of her...she even laps up antibiotics and children's Benadryl like it's candy! However, I think samples are a great idea because I'd hate to buy a bag and then find she's allergic to it or it upsets her stomach or something. She may eat anything, but the one time I fed her a little peanut butter it came back up within a couple of hours!! Her stomach doesn't necessarily agree with her tongue. Magnus, thanks for the info on the poop! It's not a pleasant subject, but it's important to me! I used to have trouble with my poodle getting it stuck in the fur under his tail. Just having to pick it up off the ground with a baggie is nothing to having to rinse it out of curly poodle hair!!! I'll be requesting a sample today, hopefully it comes soon! Thanks again so much for the advice! -C

| I have tried tons of foods but I have settled on Blue Buffalo for a number of reasons 1. All of my dogs love it 2. Recommended by Whole Dog Journal - Iams is not 3. Does not do animal testing like Iams does (IamsCruelty.com) Here is another website you also might want to look at: The Dog Food Project - How does your Dog Food Brand compare?

| Cirlonde, Funny thing is, I used to gag and get totally grossed out when I saw my friends pick up their dog's poop. Now I do it like it's nothing. The only obvious thing I want to mention is that to keep the hair around his bum short. I tend to keep an eye on his bum every now and then to make sure there isn't any "build up" around the area. But all in all, I haven't had any issues. Oh, and one more thing. When I requested samples from Wellness, it took them few weeks to get it to me so beware of the delay. Or maybe you can ask when you'll be able to get it? Good luck! |

| You may have told me this before, but what part of Oklahoma are you in? Do you have a feed/ag/animal supply store in town? They will often carry some of the better brands of food, including Wellness. If you have one, it's worth going in and seeing what they carry. We have Southern Agriculture here in Tulsa and they carry a wide selection of foods.

Anyhow, I will definitely look into the feed stores. And even if they don't carry Wellness, I don't usually pass up an opportunity to go to PetCo and I'll just have to be sure not run out of food!!! -C

| Hey, when i bought my little man from the breeder he was on purina I believe, and although it is not the same as Iams, its close enough. anyways i switched him over to wellness for puppies very slowley (because wheb you switch from something like Iams or purina to something like wellness which is really high in protein it can cause them to have upset stomach, but if you switch your dog over really slow she should be fine. Oh and as far as coat differance, he had less tears once i switched him over, before his eyes were like little water hydrants that kept the sides of his face wet 24/7 now his eyes barley tear up. Also his coat has grown much longer and is alot shiner (but that could also be because of his shampoo and conditioner.) so pretty much the only difference i saw was the amount of tears decreased besides that my little man loved the wellness! |

| I think that you getting her off Iams, and transititioned onto a healthier diet, is a fantastic idea. Iams contains corn and chicken by-products as their main sources of protein; needless to say these are not so great. If you are planning on sticking with kibble, then I would go with one of the two that you suggested in your thread, as they are a higher quality complete protein kibble. Which in turn means a healthier body and healthier organs that use protein, such as skin and hair. |
