YT Addict | Flea and flea med application questions Heyas! I have just got a new flea med for Lolli that has heartworm included, but I have a few questions. Well I think she might have contracted a flea or two. She doesn't itch incessantly but just a bit more than usual. I tried to look for the flea/s or flea dirt and I don't see any. If she does have some fleas, is it still OK to apply the medication? What if the area indicated on the instructions to apply the med (the med is Advantage Multi) on her is 'irritated' from an itch? Because the instructions say to not apply to irritated skin. But she isn't itching horribly to have open sores or anything. Should I give her a bath first? Thanks guys!

| You can still apply if she has fleas but I would recommend giving her a good scrubbing with DAWN dish detergent first to rid her of any fleas.. this way you are starting clean. If she is just itchy, applying should be fine... if her skin is obviously irritated you may want to have the vet check the area before you apply anything to it.

| Dawn Dish Detergent Flea Bath I did a search 'Dawn Dish Deterent Flea Baths" on YT and came up with many posts and also "Googled" the same topic. None really specified diluted but I would image it would have to be a dilute mix and thoroughly rinse the pup. I live in the Melbourne area beachside and battle fleas year round too. Do not give comfortis/flea meds and hartgard too close together. There's an FDA warning out about doing that and can be found on YT through search. It can be very harmful/deadly if they are given too close to each other. I usually give flea meds 1st of the month and heartgard around the 15th/2 weeks later. PM me if you have other questions/chat.

| I use advatage multi, I know it would be ok to apply if she has fleas. I would call vet about on the irritated skin. I am not sure but , It seems that you wouldn't want to apply it especially if the skin is broken.

YT Addict | Thanks ltret, that is what I did too that I saw someone say about diluting it. I did use Dawn last Sunday but I didn't get to the vet as soon as I thought I would for her meds so I have to do it again. At that time I did not dilute, and her skin where she had some flea bites got really red and she seemed a teeny uncomfortable over it after even though I rinsed her off very well and used a conditioner so thats why I asking about diluting the Dawn. She was fine after a short time but just seemed the Dawn irritated the bites. Don't want to do that again! And thanks jadabug, I will have to look after I bathe her and she settles down today to see if the area is irritated. I'm not sure if it is or not yet because I wanted to bathe her first but just wanted to ask questions first. The instructions did say not to apply to broken or irritated skin. But kind of strange since if a dog has fleas most of the skin would be kind of 'irritated'.
