Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hold on a second...before everything gets confusing here... 1) Please don't get too concerned about the use of "charcoal" - charcoal and "charcoal powder capsules" are available in many health-food stores (Whole Foods, GNC, allllll over the place) and is used by many people / vegetarians etc. for digestion issues and/or gas/bloating caused by eating so many vegetables and/or soy products (esp. used by some vegans) 2) THAT SAID....the real issue for *me* here is not the use of charcoal...rather, it is whether or not NV is using substandard meat - that's what we need to find out. We know NV gets its rabbit from China. I'm not sure NV really answered the question entirely - I'd suggest you call them and ask to speak w/ their nutritionist or someone in the know at 888-519-7387, until you get the answer. If she is still there, Jessica K. has always been helpful to me at NV. As for Primal - I really admire them (for the most part), although they do not always respond to emails in my experience. Interestingly, when you link to THEM here at Yorkie Talk and mention Primal's owner's name MATT KOSS, with whom I've spoken on the phone in the past (650-570-7400) regarding the pet-food testing issue (Primal does not do food-trials, btw )....they then seem to respond immediately, so I guess we'll see . I think the question of the quality of meat products is of utmost importance and I hope we can get answers.

I agree and thats why I have chosen not to go with this company for now, as soon as I see proof of how "high quality" their meats are then I may reconsider. I do know that many of YT'ers use this product and it comes highly recommened, so I was exteremly disappointed when I read this thread.

| yes, i do agree that the meat quality is the most important factor. however, even if charcoal is available commercially for people to consume, i don't want to give it to my baby unknowingly. seeing big chunks of charcoal like that makes me feel uneasy- esp because our babies are so small. i'm sure certain amt of charcoal is unharmful, but to feed it to my baby unknowingly twice daily without intentional added benefits and the fact that they use this denaturing process to differentiate the meat of lower quality are what really bothers me. they are adding the "coloring" or "charcoal" to differentiate substandard meat unfit for human consumption- i'm not happy with that whether or not those additives are "safe" to consume. pet food companies have disappointed me over and over. thanks for the Primal contact info. | I have been researching RAW and came across the brand Bravo. As far as i have learned, they use humane grade meat in a USDA approved facility. They make meat products for human consumption so their pet foods have to be of higher quality or they would fail all inspections.

I have not had the opportunity to reach out to them, and am still feeding NV. I looked considered trying Primal but my store only had their chicken and Remy gets itchy from Chicken... Anyhow, just curious if there is any update on this topic...

| I use Stella and Chewy"s raw. My dogs love it. But I think I will have to look a little more at the raw. Does anyone prepare their own? What about the suppliments? |

| We feed our own raw AKA prey-model. We do make our own "medallions" which have 90% meat and their weekly portion of organ/liver. As well. We don't supplement except for a salmon/borage oil for their Omega-6 and Omega-3, since we don't yet feed fish. Any pre-made food (either kibble or raw) should already be balanced which means you don't need to supplement.

| hello everyone, i apologize for not getting back to you sooner with updates. it look awhile for Primal to get back to me with answers to my questions. it looks like Primal does not denature their protein which is good news: Thank you for your inquiry. My apologies for the delay in reply. Regarding your questions, all of our meats/poultry/game are sourced from the United States and New Zealand only. You are correct, all of our proteins are human grade and never denatured. Excellent question, we greatly appreciate your knowledge around this matter. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Best Regards, Matt ____ Matt Koss Founder, President matt@primalpetfoods.com primalpetfoods.com 866.566.4652 (Toll Free) 650.570.7000 (Main Office) 650.570.7404 (Fax) so... it looks like i will stick to Primal for now. also, i just wanted to mention that i started this topic and wanted to share this information because i couldn't find the info anywhere else. i am not by any means turning anyone against using certain company's product or promoting another. nor am i saying one thing is better for our babies than the other. i'm by no means a nutritionist. i knew this was a public forum, but i never knew the power of influence it could have. i will spare everyone the details... but please consult a nutritionist about any questions you have concerning this. i will be more careful about what i post next time.

From the outset I have followed this thread with interest. While questions were clearly being raised about product quality, I never felt the credibility of a specific company was purposefully being undermined. Nor did I feel that the manner in which the questions were raised was irresponsible or irrational. I have been feeding Raw for almost 5 months now and NV has been my brand of choice. I also saw those little "things" in the medallions and did not know what they were. It is certainly valid to question the manufacturer, and as a consumer group it is reasonable to expect a response. Learning more about their processing is of tremendous value, and certainly is helpful to those of us who are purchasing their products when other competing products are also available. I have chosen to feed Raw for specific reasons. If the brand I've chosen does not satisfy my goals and objectives for Remy I want to know that so I can choose for myself to continue, or discontinue use. A wide range of topics are discussed on this site, by people of varying degrees of authority. I am not a vet, nutritionist, breeder, etc. I am, however, a pet owner who is committed to the health and well being of my Yorkie. I have also committed a great deal of time educating myself so I am a more intelligent pet owner / consumer. Like any information resource, each of us needs to evaluate on our own the validity of that which is conveyed and make our own decisions. In my opinion, learning that our ability to have a constructive, probing discussion is being impeded would begin to denigrate the value of this forum. My question would also be in regards to the "quality" of the meat that they have to denature.

| Interesting thread on raw food..I also think a person should be able to say what they feel when feeding their furbutts what ever food.. This is why we are here to learn what we can on many issues on raising our furbutts to be healthy and happy... |
