I agree there are those that just don't have the heart, inclination to do this. And I agree if a puppy is past the age where pain is greater then a vet should be called upon to do the job. However, if a person wants to learn and is taught by a breeder that has been doing it for awhile and has learned from a vet, then they should have to option of doing so. The knowledge and skill of a breeder doing this, does away with exposing the pups to heaven knows what at the vets, as well as chilling the pups at such a tender age.

Nope i think you misunderstood my post or i wasnt clear enough i didnt say everyone should take theirs to the vet. you and i had also talked about doing tails and dew claws at home earlier in this thread. that i would do it if i had hands on training. My post was saying you should be prepared to put money out when breeding, for things like tail docking and dew claw removal. | |

Performing the procedure is not for everyone. Even though I assisted me mentor through several of the procedures the first time I did it I was scared. Even now when I do it or see it done, I cry,

				 | Dew Claws called cosmetic surgery Recently when we took our pups to get their tails done and dew claws removed, one of the vets said they didn't do it because they thought it was cosmetic surgery...we have had Yorkies for over 18 years...it is a AKC standard ...she was young and probably not willing to take the time for such a low dollar procedure. I even heard where a Yorkie ended up catching their dew claw and hurting their leg...Yorkies are prone to limb injuries, why add to their woes...we assume the cost of tails and claws when we decided to breed our dogs. We also get a quantity discount since we already owned 4 Yorkies..a group rate you might say. Good luck and enjoy your new addition...life is alot better with a Yorkie in it. |

				 | My vet charges 20 dollars for dew claws and tail removal. He wont do this if they are over 5 days old. Too Late. Nerve endings have grown and can cause even more pain. I agree with you guys that if you have not been trained by a mentor or a vet, then let a professional handle it. |
