Dew Claws My YT puppy is 13 weeks old. The breeder did not remove the dew claws when she was born, but she did dock the tail. She said I can have the dew claws removed when I have her spayed, but I don't know if I should or not. |
Dew claws can be removed with her spay ,I would suggest to have it done. Those dew claws always seem to catch on things and you could risk having it pulled or torn. |
Thanks for the advice. The breeder said she doesn't remove them when she docks the tails because that is just another place you risk infection setting up. |
She probably didn't do them because of the $...J/K...Zoe doesn't have hers out and it drives me insane! I wish the breeder had taken care of them along with the tail. |
This question comes up pretty regularly. I have 3 and I had the dew claws removed when they were neutered. They had a stitch or two and did very well. Bogey's were very danglie and I was worried they would catch so his removal was more because I was worried he would hurt himself. Since the both had their surgery together I decided to have Doodlebug's done as well. They both healed nicely and I am glad that I decided to go through with it for both. :) |

infection would have really set in if it got snagged on something then ripped out, instead of the doc doing it the medical route, and putting that antiboitic on it, i keep that idoine stuff (1.99) for when my vet does the dew claws and tails to prevent infection, cause im a damn breeder...:D LOL |
Tia is still wearing hers lol but what are they there for? There must be a reason right? Anyone have any ideas? |

its just an extra toe and not all doggies get them |

Since I do the tails and claws myself, I don't have to take them into the vets and risk having the pups exposed to anything. I'd much rather do the dew claws, it's easier than doing tails, blood is stopped with a medical syptic stick. Most yorkie pups are born with the front dew claws, it's very rare that they have the hind ones too. The trick when doing the dew claws to make sure you get down far enough to inhibit regrowth. |

I learned from my mentor. But, it does require 2 people. One to hold and the other to perform the procedure. I usually put my dams outside or in another area of the house. Have a softly lighed box with a heating lamp over it close to me. Each puppy is taken from the welping box one at a time and the procedure is performed. Is there crying? Usually a wimper. When each one is finished I put it in the softly lined box beside me to monitor for bleeding. When all is done, bring mom in and put her with them. Pups will be comforted by her and they'll settle down to sleep. I do keep watch for about 3 days for infection, never had it happen. But, I keep epsom salt on hand. |

THANKS =) i dont mind the crying and putting mommy out, and keeping it clean from infection im scared of doing it wrong, i was reading where you could cut the spine. i actually bought the hemostats and the whole bit last year but chickened out. and the tieing something around and twisting off or letting it fall off, just really really bothers me. |
