| Interceptor Flavor Tabs So my vet gave me a pill that is apparently a heart worm preventative. Has anyone used this? I'm a bit reluctant to use this drug, since he hardly goes outside anyways. However, if it is not dangerous, I would like to continue to use it as a preventative. He is only about 4 months- and weighs 2 1/2 pounds. |

| my vet only recommends interceptor or sentinel for heartworm preventatives for my yorkies...i believe they have been documented as having the least amount of negative reactions and a low failure rate (meaning getting heartworm while being on the preventative) and i like the fact they have doses metered for 2-10 lbs (unlike other heartworm which is up to 25lbs)...i have a problem giving my kids - all who weigh less than 4lbs - the same amount of medicine that a 25lb dog would get any drug given to our babies should be well thought out...but heartworm is prevalent in many parts of the US and i personally would rather be safe than sorry...i am sure you will get more responses from more of the experts on here ooh and my vet wanted me to get my youngest (bree) on interceptor the minute she reached 2lbs

Check out this website. Unbelievable picture, and info on giving heartworm meds year round, even for inside dogs. Just an FYI.

| All mine have been on Interceptor since day one. (As well as my dogs before them.) Mine stay inside for the most part, but living in Alabama, it's not uncommon for mosquitos to get in your house too, so it's well worth it. Years ago, I had a dog that had heartworms. I have walked the road of having a dog treated for and recovering from that before and I will do whatever it takes from having one of mine have to go through that again! |

| Since mosquitos can fly into your house, your pup isn't protected without a preventative. Interceptor does have side effects but is relatively safe.

| So no one has really had problems with interceptor? I live in Wisconsin(for the moment) the doctor recommended that I use it year round. The product itself says that you don't have to use during the winter if mosquitoes are not present. Our summer is short here so do you guys think its wise to keep dosing him even during the winter? Side effects have been reported even on YT if I remember right. It should be just fine though.

| Nope, never had any problems and have had 6 Yorkies, 1 Bassett, 3 Pekes, 1 Mutt on it. We do it year round too. If they ever miss doses, it's recommended that they be tested before starting treatment back up again, so I just keep them on it. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 03-05-2009 at 07:29 AM. |

| Lola is 4 lbs and 1 year old and since I got her(which was asap after her 8th week b-day. ) she's been on interceptor. My vet(whom I trust completely) sat me down and discussed the options I had in heartworm preventitives. He even used a dry erase board to illustrate some points. lol Like several posters have said "Better safe than sorry." |

| Copper has been on this no problem, and he is a very sensitive dog. However just started Maddie on it tuesday, she was so sick after I gave it to her, vommiting, bloody diarreah, it really upset her stomach. it has been 2 days and she is just now getting back to normal all the way. The vet thinks that it may have been a little much on her system coupled with shots and that she is exactly 2lbs, so she barely made the cut off. When I called he had said that he didn't normally have problems with that one, and he mainly works with small dogs. Every dog is different, I am going to keep Copper on the interceptor and try something else with Maddie.
