| Itching, Scratching and red rash - help? My Yorkie started breaking out, itching until bleeding under her arms, belly area, feet and legs after being spayed. It all started once the surgery was done. The vet has put her on Termaril-P (a steriod) to help her stop breaking out. Once the medicine is over - she starts to break out again. When she breaks out, she sweats and smells like "urine". We can't test her for allergies b/c she has to be off the steriods for 60 days to do the test. We can't go that long with something not in her body ( we have tried Benadryl and doesn't affect her) because she scratches herself to bleeding. We have changed her bedding, her food to all hypoallergenic from the vet and nothing has changed. Help? Has anyone had this problem or do you think it could be related to the surgery? Thanks for ANY ADVICE! Lexie's Mom

| Boy, I sure would suspect the spay. How long afterwards did her symptoms start? And how long has this been going on already? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have they done a skin scraping yet? What are you feeding? If she is truly sweating and smelling like urine, I'd be asking for blood work to be done - esp. the kidneys and maybe thyroid - but an overall panel as well. Your poor baby, how awful!

| Okay .... dogs can't sweat What is oozing from the wounds is lumphatic fluid The same thing you see on people when we get a rug burn and it can have a smell to it But what she is reacting to after the surgery will depend on how long ago the surgery actually is She could be having reactions to the anesthesia, the sutures, the pain meds she was on after the surgery but all of these should be temporary and I'd ask the Vet all about the possibilities

| Our OP said that the vet put her on steroids and when she stopped she broke out again. That makes me believe that this has been going on for a while and probably isn't connected to the spay after all? Her vet should be able to do something else to diagnose the problem. Sweetie if you are still on here please see about getting her to another vet. Don't let her suffer a minute longer. |

| Itching and scratching Thanks to all the reply's. The vet did do a skin scrap and it came back negative. She started to break out all over her belly where the sutures were when she had the surgery back in November. The vet gave her some antibiotics, a steriod shot and some powder medicine to clear it up. It cleared up, then when everything was out of her system it started back again. I took her back to the vet and they gave her more antibiotics and more steriods. You can still feel the sutures inside her from the surgery and I asked the vet about that and she said the only to check that would be to open her back up again. I really think I am going to have to go to another vet for a second opinion.

| wow...no solutions that aren't expensive or complicated Does anyone have any tried and true solutions that don't cost an arm and a leg??? the yorkie I am babysitting is scratching under her arms until her skin is red, scarring and near bleeding. I cant afford to do anything about it...tried a bath, tried her medicated skin crap...nothing works. this is truly ridiculous. I feel like I am caring for a needy child. |

What does the owner say about the issue?

| I had a friend that had a reaction such as this after his surgery. It continued for weeks until he started having terrible pain in the stomach. He sought a second opinion and they had left a sponge inside him. Could this happen with an animal? Just a thought. |
