Itching, Scratching and red rash - help?

Thanks to all the reply's. The vet did do a skin scrap and it came back negative. She started to break out all over her belly where the sutures were when she had the surgery back in November. The vet gave her some antibiotics, a steriod shot and some powder medicine to clear it up. It cleared up, then when everything was out of her system it started back again. I took her back to the vet and they gave her more antibiotics and more steriods. You can still feel the sutures inside her from the surgery and I asked the vet about that and she said the only to check that would be to open her back up again. I really think I am going to have to go to another vet for a second opinion.

get a second opinion as could be the dog is allergic to the antibiotics as well as they can have allergies to those - my dog broke out in hives after 17 days on simplicef and she was itchy on clindamyacin so we had to up her steroids when taking them for staph infection

LOL try dealing with this for 5 YEARS ughhhhh - can you put a tshirt on her as we call it tshirt therapy and so does our derm it really works and protects the skin - sounds like she may be allergic to something in your house. Ask owner to check with vet about benedryl that is the first step

What does the owner say about the issue?

The owner has taken her to a dermatologist and has shampoo and lotion for the yorkie. She would probably on some level blame it on me and say I did not rinse her well enough or something. Luckily for me the grandparents are taking over babysitting tonight. I put a little neosporin under her arms.This dog has had sooooo many problems. She has an appointment with the vet at the end of the week and this will certainly be brought to her attention because she has little scabs now and though it looks like it is healing it does not look healthy. It could be stress from all the babysitters. I don't know!!! But it would be really great if someone wrote a book on how to fix up all the yorkie problems without having to take them to the vet every month!!! And without blaming the owner...I walk on eggshells with this dog...she's kind of a bully for attention!

After your last post, I wonder if it is the dogs nerves and stress she is under. Dogs CAN SENCE human stress. It doesn't sound like this is a dog you should consider dogsitting again and the owners should look for someone who would be better suited to care for her the next time they need a sitter. Sounds like you are very intune with what stresses you out so I am sure after this experience you will gracefully bow out next time you are asked to care for her. It would be in her best interest!!

you might need to get some hydrocortisone lotion from petsmart..it works wonders.

I guess you are the expert. but actually I if you mean "SENSE" yes I am sure the dog can sense stress. I guess you are implying it is my fault she is scratching....that doesn't really make any sense. If a dog is reacting to me by scratching impulsively I would say she has a larger issue than me. Not that I do not appreciate your judgementalism...we all judge people it is part of human nature to blame others and jump to conclusions....I think the yorkie has health issues outside of me. I stay with her all the time, take her for walks, play with her, feed her, let her sleep with me, I brush her and never even so much as raise my voice to her which is more than she gets from her grandparents or her mom so I would say you dont really know what you are talking about other than you love the fact that your yorkie loves you regardless of what a troll you are....nough said.

that is because this breed is inbred so much they have horrible immune systems and i do not think it is a bully for attention it is because the dog has a poor immune system like mine and it is heart breaking when they are not healthy and have this as there is no cure

Seriously you are so far from the truth...but since you think you are the doc why don't you tell me why it is you believe I (which you are basing your judgements off of maybe two paragraphs of descriptions) should not babysit this particular Yorkie which I have hardly describe to you what so ever. Since this forum is for learning about Yorkies why don't you expand on your theory that I am not fit to take care of my sisters dog...please enlighten me. Or any of you that agree with the doc here...go ahead and let me in on your philosophy of yorkie-ism. After all I am just a simple gal.

Oh that is sad. I was watching the dog whisperer and they actually used the term bullying for attention so I was not being completely original in using it. I think the term applies to this Yorkie as well as the Yorkie on TV that was being analyzed. I love this dog but I do not think it is a hopeless battle of her genetic makeup. I think there is hope that she can overcome her health issues and live a nice long natural life. That is what my whole family believes. This is my sister's dog. She has entrusted me to care for her on several occasions and I have done my best to keep the dog happy and healthy. Though I think sometimes she is spoiled and "bullies" me for attention in that she walks on my head when I am in bed, she jumps on me, and tries to sleep in between my legs at night so that I cannot move all night...I do not think it is sensible to loose sleep so she can sleep exactly where she wants...

yeah if it is allergies trust me i know about it been going this journey for over 5 years and $9000 later going holistic, dermatology, blood specialists you name it there is no cure when it is severe enough so get ready for a wild ride if it is allergies and environmental which it is 90% of the time so only options if that is it are hyposensitization shots, atopica or steroids and hypo shots are most natural but only work in 85% of dogs. It is no fun watching a dog itch all the time and can be very frustrating as you feel helpless sometimes and we are at the steroid route so then you battle with feeling guilty about giving steroids but we are at our wits end so steroids it is

Sorry, Sorry, Sorry to offend you. I didn't mean YOU were the problem. It just appeard you were very upset and stressed and yes was looking to get blamed for what is going on with the dog. My daughter (to my knowledge) has never been mean to Joey, however, when she kept him just during the day for me, He would whine and whimper the whole time he was with her, then he would get sick and shake. I think it was because SHE was stressed out because she was afraid he would get out the door or something would happen to him while in her care. She is in a wheelchair, (and yes she loves me even though I am a troll) HA HA So I am sorry to have made you feel that way. I just know it's hard to say no, especially when it is family. And in our case, Jess and Joey are fine at our home but they can't do it at her house. Just too stressfull for both of them. And I, being the owner and mom, am the responsible party to take charge of the situation and find a more suited caregiver for Joey when it is needed. I did not mean to put blame on you, but rereading my post it would seem that way. Hope you will forgive the old TROLL!! LOL
