| Is mixing wet canned food with dry food for Yorkie puppy ok? Hello Everyone = ). I am a new owner of a little male Yorkshire terrier puppy named Sammy, he is 14 weeks old. I have a few questions in regards to his diet. I have been feeding him dry kibbles ever since I got him from the breeder, and my friend recently told me that I should switch to wet food because they are more nutritious. I started mixing wet food with his dry kibbles approximately 3 days ago and I noticed he's been having much softer stool than before (his stool is much harder when I was only feeding him dry food). Now I am concern the wet food is not agreeing with his tummy. I've read on a few websites that feeding Yorkie wet food is bad because it can promote bad dental health, would you recommend me to feed him wet food mix with dry food? Or should I stick with strictly dry food? If I should mix his dry food with wet food, how can I stop him from having soft stool? Thank you in advance, I am so confused and so worry that my puppy is suffering because I had changed his diet. |

I don't really feel that canned food is more nutritious, but sometimes these pups won't eat dry kibble, so it's good to get them eating. Sounds like he was eating good before, is that correct? Any diet change with these guys should be done SUPER slowly and over the course of 7-10 days. Most likely that extra canned food has just upset his tummy a bit. You can try some canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling- just the plain stuff) until his tummy lines out. If he eats his dry food, I wouldn't feed him canned but that is totally up to you. You will get LOTS of info here! Welcome and I hope your little guy gets to feeling better!

| Well from things that I've learned on this site, for a first time puppy, when you start mixing in canned food, their stool is going to become softer than usual. If you do keep mixing in the canned food, he probably will eventually get used to it and his stool should go back to normal. IMO, I don't really care for using canned food. My little one has always been fine on the dry and I've never had a need to use canned food with her. I was always afraid that she'd get to used to the canned food and would stop eating dry altogether. I'm not sure about canned food being more nutritious than dry. That may be a false statement, but then again I could be wrong as well. I'm sure there are other members on this site that will be able to give you some more information. |

| I'm not sure that you would see a big difference in the health of a dog on canned as compared to dry. I like canned because it is less processed than dry and the moisture is good for them. I am not in 100% agreement with the, "Canned is horrible for their teeth" statement either. Kibble may be somewhat better but their teeth should be brushed anyway and the benefits of canned outweigh the problems with it to me. I also think it would be hard to find any accurate research about canned causing tooth decay. That said, if your pup is having soft stool and it isn't going away, I would either changed canned foods, reduce the amount you are giving and give more dry or go back to dry altogether. Soft stool long-term (or very soft stool that could lead to dehydration in a Yorkie short-term) isn't healthy.

| When I started mixing a little canned with my doggies kibble their stool did get a bit softer but that only lasted about a week or so then it went back to normal. I don't think canned food is any more nutritious than kibble. I do like the fact that it's moist because Chloe never seem to drink much water. Both my dogs seemed to only eat the bare minimum of their kibble each day and were not at all enthused about eating. I tried a couple different foods but they always seemed disinterested so I decided I would by a can and see how they liked it. I only mix about 1 good tablespoon in their kibble ( only for the breakfast meal) and they eat every bite now ! They lick the bowl clean! I wouldn't recommend an all canned diet but that's just my opinion. Mine are happy to just get that tablespoon mixed in their breakfast meal. They get just dry kibble for the rest and are now eating that better throughout the day so it worked well for us.

| Thank You Everyone! For all of your inputs; I really apprecaite it! = ) I tried to get Sammy back to eating his dry food today, unfortunately he doesn't seem too interested in the food anymore. I will continue trying, and if he still won't eat it dry I'll just mix a spoon full of wet food with his dry food and I'll brush his teeth every night to keep his tartar under control. Thank you again for all of your helpful input! |

| Mixing wet food with Dry food to tempt a dog to eat isnt a bad idea, however, giving wet food as a prime food source is not to smart. Most wet dog foods such as mighty dog is all water, so just make sure you read the ingrediants......I"m not a fan of wet food so i probably am no help to ya!

| I give my 10 month old Suzi canned food, and dry too. It is made by the same company. She gets one meal per day of canned and the kibble is out all the time along with fresh water. She is doing well on both with no probelms at all. The canned foor I give her is By Nature and is rated 6 on the super pre. foods. Her kibble is a 4 , so I believe they both are fine .
