| Vaccination ??? I see where it's suggested to not give the rabies vaccine with the others but am curious as to the reasoning for this. Gracie has an appointment tomorrow for several vaccines and now I worried about it but she is being boarded this month and needs all of them.

| One reason for not giving all shots at the same time.... too much in the system all at once... Another reason.... if they have a reaction.... which shot was it???? Good luck!

The rabies vaccine is responsible for the most reactions and if she reacts to something, you won't know for sure what it was. If the reaction is severe enough, the vaccine would probably be skipped altogether next time. It is also very potent and can be hard on them. I personally wouldn't want to do more than DHPP in one or two weeks.

| It is my understanding that it is in the AAHA Guidelines that IF you are going to do the vaccines, they should not be given together in one shot or in the same local area. Like someone mentioned above, if there is a reaction to a vaccine, vets are 'required' to report it and to which vaccine the reaction was to. They would not be able to do this with an 'all in one' shot, cause there is no way to know which vaccine they are reacting to. But it has been my experience that it is hard to find a vet who does the shots the way they are supposed to, much less report it if there is a reaction. (At least where I am) I made the decision to start seeing a vet who has hollistic approach to vet medicine and vaccinates based on individual titers and the dogs lifestyle. He is not so hollistic that he doesn't feel there is a place for conventional medicine if used properly. I really like that. (He is Dr Messioner, wrote the "Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats, great book, I recommend for anyone) I see him once a year because he is so far away (so hard to find them) and have a local vet that I see when needed, but each time I go, they want to talk to me again about getting the vaccines! I also use a groomer/boarder who accepts titer results in place of vaccination records. I probably didn't help you much here with your problem, did I???? |

| Unfortunately, Piccolo and I learned from personal experience about too many vaccines at one time. All kinds of reactions can happen. (From immediate to 6 months later) Could you split the vaccines up in the next month?

| Thank you so much for the replies. I assumed that part of it was if they had a reaction you wouldn't know which one was the culprit. Is the system overload an issue for all sizes or just more of an issue for little ones?

| Are you aware that the same dosage is given to all dogs? It does not go by size? So a large puppy is given the same as a tiny 1 lber! The rabies vaccine made my puppy exhausted. All she did was sleep the rest of the day. And that is the normal reaction. i'd defiantely give that one separtely from the rest.

| Rabies is particularly hard on them. Ranger had his year-old boosters and will be getting his rabies shot next week. I dread it because I know it makes them feel so crappy. Unfortunately, the reason all dogs are given the same dose is due to the requirements from the vaccine company. If your vet didn't follow what is written as protocol by the drug company they would be liable if your dog were to contract rabies. I always make sure mine get a shot of benadryl prior to vaccines to reduce the chance of a reaction, and to help them konk out and "sleep off" the crappy feeling from the vaccines. I also always do it in the morning and plan to stay at home all day snuggling on the couch

I have never seen a reaction to the rabies vaccine, however, with these smaller breeds they dont want to over vaccinate. there was another post on here and some states dont require the rabies-which i found odd, but i guess to each its own. Usually if you are boarding your dog they need to be up to date with rabies and bordetella vaccine. Good Luck!

My vet gives it prior to the vaccine. If you have to give it yourself, you would use children's benadryl, at the dosage your vet recommends. I have it written down but I *think* it's one mg per pound. Don't quote me on that. But your vet shouldn't have a problem doing it before the shot. Good luck and give that Gracie a bit ole hug from me!!

| [quote=stovesj;2417622]Yes, I was aware of that and I'm not sure why they don't adjust according to weight as many medications have age or weigh dosages for people. Maybe we should get on the band wagon and have this adjusted for the health of our pets.[/quote You could become part of the Rabies Challenge Program that is trying to get laws and regs changed on rabies for the benefit of dogs.
