| Cloudy eyes in a yorkie puppy? Hello, We just got our very first yorkie. She is 3 1/2 months old. My husband and I have noticed that both of her eyes are cloudy in appearance. Her vision seems to be fine. I plan on asking my vet on our next visit but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have been searching on the internet and haven't found info regarding puppies with cloudy eyes -only older dogs with cataracts or injuries to the eye. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this topic. Beth |

| Was it cloudy when you picked the puppy out? It sure sounds like cataracts, and this condition can occur at any age and sometimes puppies can even be born with this. I think I would see if the breeder wouldn't take responsibility for Vet. cost if you keep this puppy.

| I agree that it could be dogaracts. DO you know if there has been any injury to the eyes? Did the puppy get into anything that could have caused injury? Check with the breeder to see if there is eye diseases in the family - i.e., glaucoma.

| It sounds like she could have juvenile cataracts. You need to take her to your vet and possibly get a referral to an opthamalogist to find out what the cloudiness is. Have you spoken to her breeder? Juvenile cataracts are hereditary. Did you get a health guarantee? There is a surgery to correct cataracts that is very successful, but it is pretty expensive. |

| My Little guy had cloudy looking eyes when he first came to us (at 7 months) from a bad breeder in Florida. He was in rough shape when he arrived: very weak and malnourished... I was very concerned about his cloudy eyes, but the vets couldn't find anything wrong with his eyesight. In time as we nursed him back to health his eyes cleared right up! And to this day still no eyesight probs. So you may not have a long term prob or significant concern here...Good luck |

| There has been no injury that we are aware of. I never really noticed cloudiness early on. She was sick when we got her with an upper respiratory infection that lasted several weeks but after several rounds of antibiotics she recovered. Our vet has seen her three times and has not mentioned anything about the eyes but I never asked as I did not seem to notice it as much. We are related to the breeder and know that the mother and father are healthy dogs. She would have never intentionally sold us a dog with eye problems but this is the very first litter she has sold. I really appreciate everyone's comments. I can tell that this website will be very useful to me as a new yorkie Mom. Sometimes her eyes look almost blue - I was hoping you guys might say that yorkie pups are kind of like babies - born with light eyes that may change color over time which might account for the cloudy look. I will take her to our vet this week and let you know what happens. |

Unfortunately, my vet did detect an issue with her eyes today. To give you some background, she had a bad upper respiratory condition when we got her @ 10 weeks of age. It took about 4 weeks to get rid of all the nasal/ cough/ wheezing. \ Shortly after her recovery is when I started to notice cloudiness in her eyes. After an eye stain and examination from my vet today, he determined that both eyes had internal inflammation. She has also been experiencing what I would describe as a small nervous tic. She shudders her little head back and forth for about a second and then stops. This has become more frequent over the past few days. The vet asked me if she has been throwing up or having diahrrea - she has had diahrrea the last two days but I thought it was probably due to her trying to eat absolutely everything she can get a hold of when she goes outside for a walk. With all of these symptoms - starting with the cough, now the eyes, diahrrea, and the muscular twitch / tic, my vet is afraid she may have contracted distemper. Evidently Distemper usually starts with the coughing/ sneezing/ nasal discharge and then can progress to GI symptoms, ocular problems, and can cause neurological damage which can present as a tic and can progress to severe seizures. My vet is not sure but we will treat the eyes with drops over the next few days. I take her back in on Friday. I am just praying that this is a series of coincidences and that she does not have distemper. I didn't really know much about distemper -- it is a very scary disease and there is no cure. Please keep my little Daisy in your prayers. | |

| Update on Daisy Well, I took her to the vet again on Friday. The drops are keeping her eyes from getting worse. We are now treating the diarrhea. Her tic has become a little more frequent. The good news is that she is still eating, playful and seems happy. We should know in a few weeks whether she is going to fight this off or if the distemper will progress. Please keep her in your prayers. I can't stand that thought of losing her. I will post an update in a few weeks. Thanks. |

| Update on Daisy Well, my vet is convinced that my little one has beat the odds with distemper. She is a very happy pup - would never know that she has been fighting off symptoms of distemper. The only lasting symptom is the inflammation in the eyes which makes them appear cloudy. She has been on steriod drops twice a day for this. They are much better because at one time they were almost white/gray. But they are still not clear like my friends who have yorkies. She also still has the mild nervous tic due to the distemper's affects on the neurological system ( not sure of the spelling but my vet called this "myoclonis" ??). It doesn't seem to bother her and it is not getting worse. I was afraid to post an update until I knew she was going to make it. We have become so attached to her and she is doing great! Thanks for everyone's concern. I know we were very lucky to not lose her. |
