Default Allergies, I was going to start a Thread but I found one here.

I'm having the ITCHY'S too... okay it's not me, but my little Ms. Lola has the Itchy's. It's so bad it makes me want to cry. I've had her since May 25th and I knew she had some Allergies, but didn't know to what existent. She previously lived up in a very woodsy area and her allergies went away up there. But I live in Northern California in the middle of the Suburbs and she is just pulling all of her beautiful long hair out! "In Clumps" EEK!

I've tried, Pet Solutions - Shampoo & Conditioner which is a prescription from her Vet. It has Oatmeal & Aloe in it. I also have been using John Paul's Oatmeal Conditioner Spray and Natural Care's - Itch Relief Hot Spot Spray, and I have been adding Lipiderm to her food which has Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids and Vitamin A & E, and Zinc which I heard was good for itching. I feed her Chicken Breast with Natural Balance "Beef" Roll with a little bit (20 pieces) of Royal Canin Yorkie-28 which she licks all the chicken off of the Yorkie-28 and she saves them for lunch...umm! but she does eat them.

After all of that, my poor baby is still scratching like a Crazy Maniac! I tend to say she has A.D.D. (Adult Devisat Disorder) or should I say Y.D.D. (Yorkie Devisat Disorder) She only stops scratching if she is sleeping or If I'm playing with her feet. I have a call into her Vet right now for some advise to help her. Then right when I was about to start a new Thread, I saw this one.
Thank you to Cinnamonmon for starting this Thread!

~OKAY~ Funny thing just happened that I had to share. I'm sure this has happened to some of the long haired dog owners. My Lola was sleeping next to me on her back and I leaned over to part the hair and give her a little kiss. Once I moved all of her hair I found her little butt and not her face, which is what I was looking for. hehehehe

~OKAY, BACK ON TRACK~
Does anyone else, have this much of a problem? I seem to have tried a lot of stuff, with no success. Has Benadryl been successful to a pup that has such a bad itch problem? I will go to the store right now! What ever it takes, What do I get?

anymore! Can anyone give me any other advise on any other products? My baby needs help!

I think i read on here that a lot of people had scratching dogs with Royal Canin. Benydryl works for a lot of dogs, but did nothing for Cali's allergies. She is now on the prescription Atopica with some relief.

I have to agree about the Royal Canin, as I think it has corn in it. If you are already feeding Natural Balance roll (which you may have to stop) I would look into an Allergy formula by Natural Balance. Make sure all treats are pretty much grain/corn free. Next, I would not put anything on her skin, other than the Vet shampoo. Adding conditioner that sits on the skin leaving a residue could be adding to the problem and make sure to rinse the shampoo very, very, very well. Make sure to not add fabric softner to your washes and I would change detergent to the one that is free of dyes and frangrances, vacumming and dusting helps too.

Now for the benedryl. I have given 1/2 childrens chewable in the AM and PM - at one point my vet said to give 3x a day, that was when Roxy was at the worst part. But like Patti says, it works for some, but not for all, however, if it works and you can get her to relax with the itching and let that skin heal (which I have read takes 30 days for skin to rejuvinate) then you'll get her to a better point.

Kasey has had recurring itchiness since day one.... We've been to the vet a number of times -- and it's been tough to figure out the problem, though we suspect allergies. I find she does best when she stays on her regular food (Artemis for adult small breeds, mixed with fresh boiled chicken and water) and treats (Wellness chicken or lamb treats -- no corn, wheat or anything like that in them, and she lovvves them).

The medicated shampoo the vet recommended that seemed to soothe her is called Malaseb. Many vets sell it for about $26, but I also found it online for half of that price. You leave it on for 10 minutes -- I just give her a little massage. (Eventually she starts nudging the faucet, as if she thinks she needs to remind me that rinsing comes next! So cute!)

Good luck. It's so hard to see them feeling under the weather....

Oh I hate to say there are many of us here with the same problem... We too have tried it all.. I personally just tried Benedryl and I'm said to say we had no luck I think she reacted to that too. She got real red and she was biting in a frenzy.. the worst I think I've seen.. It seems to me its a hard battle and we all feel your pain.. I found this web site earthclinic.com It has natural remedies. Trixie was being treated for mange the vet wanted to rule it out before we aggressively went after allergies. Any way I went to this site and found that Borax mixed with peroxide or apple cider vinegar will kill mites among many bacterias including yeast.. I was very hesitant but in desperation I gave it try.. I did find that if I used it in her final rinse after her bath she does find some relief. I now put it a spray bottle and spray it on her when she bites herself red.. I literally notice the redness calming down not to say that she doesn't still scratch but it's better.( I have to put a shirt on her too) This also helps so there aren't secondary infections which can help with those vet bills. Lots of luck to and as far as sleeping get used to that to I have moved Trixie to the floor with a pillow and I still wake up telling her to stop bitting.. I'ts soooo sad..Heart breaking actually..

I have two Bichons who have been itching like crazy, too. I have lots of experience with itchies and hot spots because my Cosmo used to get them really bad, but has been itch free for about four years. My Lacy has never had itchies in her 11 years, but has them this year. They eat Wysong Synorgon and Canidae low-cal food. I am thinking of switching them to Wellness Core or Wellness Fish food, which are totally grain free. I have tried many, many remedies and try to treat them myself, if possible, because vet visits go on and on and are expensive and don't do the trick a lot of times. I put a couple of inches of warm water in the bath tub, add a box of baking soda, and stir. Then stand the dog in the water and pour the mixture over it, letting it soak into the coat well. I only dry the dog enough to keep it from dripping and let it air dry. This has never failed to help the itching. You also can use a cotton ball and put this mixture on a red/raw place and it soothes. I put clear aloe gel on red/raw places or hydracordizone cream or even neosporin. If you put medication on the places, you need to be sure the dog doesn't ingest it. I have several baby onesies that I put on Lacy and Cosmo to keep them from scratching or licking themselves. You want to leave a raw place open to the air if you can, but sometimes that isn't possible, and you need to cover the place(s) until they at least begin to heal. If not, the dog just keeps scratching and licking and there isn't a chance for the places to heal. I also give them children's chewable benadryl tablets. The vet said they could have three a day, about 8 hours apart. The rule is one mg of benadryl per pound of weight. My Bichons weigh 12 and 15 pounds. I also use a lot of Gold Bond medicated powder. This is excellent for light irritation and is soothing. I am going to get some Tea Tree Oil, which has been highly recommended, and some Aquaphor Healing Ointment that you can get at Walmart. Not sure where you can get the Tea Tree Oil, probably at a drug store. Someone also recommended Gentaved spray. My vet said a lot of dogs are suffering with bad allergies right now, even his dogs. My vet also told me to keep Lacy and Cosmo inside in the air conditioning. We love early morning walks, but have given them up for now.

I've been having trouble with Maddie also. It worries me because she's getting a bare patch on her lower back. I'm thankful that it's not fleas! But I had thought it might be because her hair has grown out and she don't like it, but since she's not going 'bald' anywhere else, and I haven't changed her food or anything, I guess I have to conclude that it's either stress because we just moved to a new place and it was quite traumatic on her, or that it's an allergic reaction from her last bath. Having just moved, I still had not located her shampoo and she REALLY needed a bath. Since it was too late to go anywhere, I just used some liquid soap I had here. She was ok for a few days after that, so I'm not sure what is the cause. I reckon I'll just take her back to a puppy cut and bath her with her regular shampoo and pray it helps.

Default This is what worked for us on food allergies

I had the same problem with our lil girl - she was chewing her back end and around her eyes were red and she was scratching her face alot. I took her to the vet and its classic food allergies. I was told to put her on Science diet ZD which is for allergies. I am NOT a fan of science diet but I have to admit it is working great! I would much rather holistic but I couldnt find any that worked for her.The kibble size on the ZD is huge for her because she is only 3 pounds so I soaked some until it is was soft and then I crumble some dry kibbles and I use a little of the zd wet and I make her a buffet plate and she eats better than she ever has and the symptoms are going away.It did take about 3-4 weeks to see results though. Two vets told me that it takes 8 weeks to get food allergies out of their system so when you keep switching food its so hard to know what is triggering it - I know because thats what I was doing and it was only making her worse my good intentions were not working. Good luck I know how frustrating this is.

We were just about to post about our lil Jazzy scratching so much .... the vet said initially it was dry skin (she saw some dandruff) but since then we have been giving her oatmeal/warm water baths and its subsided but not gone away unfortunately ..

Is there any over the counter/pet store things we can try not listed thus far?
Like any of the sprays/conditioners?

Thanks a lot for this thread, it makes me feel better that we are not alone in itchy-land!

Maggie has the itchies too, not really bad like Mitzi had but enough to make her bite her paws all the time and scratch frequently. It helps to put a cotton shirt on her to sooth the bodyt itching and it also helps to put some little shoes on her feet but of course Mikki, our puppy, thinks we do that for her entertainment and poor Maggie is attacked constantly and the shoes are pulled off by the little devil. BTW, the shoes are cut off fingers of garden gloves fixed with double sided velcro...

I came to re-read this too - I moved from a house to an apartment and my girls never EVER scratched and never had fleas ....since moving - I did find one on Chanel and so far have spent over 200 treating them and my apt - I haven't seen ONE flea since I took measures - but they're still itching - the scratching is mostly in the early early morning -

so for those who may think it's allergies - it COULD be fleas - even one flea can make a dog scratch endlessly - MAN I HATE THEM ! in 6 years this is my first time having to deal with this problem and everyone is so right - you feel so bad seeing them scratch

My baby, Lola found a wonderful fitting outfit that prevent the itching crazy girl. We used them for her Spay surgery and then decide we loved them.
I live in California so I went to BAbies R Us and got her the Premie size Onesies/bodysuit. They have 3 snaps between the legs... so leave the center snap open, for her tail.
She wears them backwards so they fit better, and you can see the decoration on their back....CUTE!
We love them so much... we went back and bought another 5 pack the other day.
Here is a cute photo of her in her cute onesies.

I belong to two other dog-related lists and itchies are a big topic of conversation of both of them, too. This year is really a bad one!

Aw, she's adorable. I have used onesies for years. They are great for keeping the dog from scratching/licking.
