| What to expect after spay?! hi my name is marie and i'm new here ! i have an 8 month old 3lb yorkie who i am obsessed with. shes my baby! i'm stressing out over her spay. its been postponed twice so far. once because she had dirreha due to something bad she ate (boo boo ) and the other time due to a mix up in schedule (i stressed out for 2 weeks FOR NO REASON !). her spay is on july 3rd and im already stressing out again. she goes to petsmart banfield vets and i really like it there. i had gone to a different vet prior and i felt they werent as professional and didnt follow up on her. i just wanted to know what to expect after shes spayed and what i should be prepared for AND i just realized a day after her surgery the poor girl has to hear fireworks going off every 5 minutes BABYYY |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk Spay day is never fun. Whatever vet you use, they should have a good surgical protocol. Not all vets do. For a spay the dog should have an IV placed before surgery. In case of an emergency, medication can be administered without wasting time to place the IV then. She should also get fluids the day of the surgery. The vet should do surgery on a heated surfact because toy breeds lose body heat so quickly. Pain medication should be offered. Pre-op blood work is the best way to go but some feel it isn't necessary. I wouldn't do a routine surgery without it. And the right anesthesia should be used. Isoflurane or sevoflurane are gas and should be used to maintain and an injection of something else to calm the dog enough to intubate. That is probably the most preferred protocol. Hopefully your vet will be willing to pull any baby teeth that didn't fall out so she doesn't have to go under again. She might be given an e-collar to wear but several members of YT have found that a baby onesie accomplishes the same thing and it lots more comfortable. It would be okay to use one as long as she doesn't try to get to her incision through it. She might be lethargic for a few days and her appetite might not be great. The first night she may just lay down and not move. She should urinate by the next day in my opinion and have a bowel movement within about two days. If you can't get her to drink the day after surgery, I'd probably syringe water to her. If she won't eat anything, you could give a small amount of PediaLyte. She can't run, jump or climb for a least 7-10 days and better yet wait til the stitches come out. Bather her before surgery because she can't have one til after stitch removal. If they are making you leave her overnight after surgery, make sure someone is there awake the whole time. If not you might want to refuse to leave her because it is dangerous but so many vets do this. One more bit of advice...look at the incision when you bring her home so you have something to compare it to over the next week. It's important to check it for redness, swelling... By the way, your baby is adorable.

When you pick her up she will be in pain and a bit groggy. When you get her home make her comfy. Be sure to ask for some pain meds. Zoey came home with pain meds that were taken twice a day for three days and antibiotics that were for a whole week. She probably wont' eat much but will want to drink and she will be peeing from the iv. Also ask the vet to remove any extra teeth while she is under so you won't have that worry. By the following morning Zoey was right as rain. She was in a bit of pain from the surgery but mommy made sure to give her those pain pills and lots of treats. I didn't have any problems with her harrassing her sutures. I did take the day off so I could have three consecutive days off with her to baby her and give her all the attention she needed. Otherwise nothing else that was noteworthy. My Zoey was 2 lbs 13 ozs when I had her spayed last month on the 26th. No problems at all. When her sister Lulu was spayed she was around the same weight as well. Good luck and don't be too nervous. They pick up on our nerves.

It can be dangerous. Too much can go wrong when they have all those drugs in their system and a new incision. If it were me, I'd insist on taking her home (and watching her VERY closely ready to go to an er vet if necessary) and if they won't let you, I'd get it done somewhere else. Or you can transfer her to a 24 hour er after surgery that day for further observation.

| All of the above info is so thorough and helpful - make sure you listen to all these super smart YT people. I just wanted to add that I did wait for my baby to be 9 months, just because I was hoping more baby teeth would fall out, but she ended up having over 15 baby teeth pulled in conjunction to her spay. My little Bean is only 2.5 pounds and she came through the surgery like a champion. She actually peed on her papers right when we got home because they had kept her on IV fluids the entire time she was with them at the vet. (She also went on her super expensive blankie that I had them put in her recovery crate so it would smell like home and be more comfy, but no matter!) She pooed the next morning and was definitley uncomfortable, but within a week was her normal self, but cautious about her incision, within two weeks she was even more herself, the incision was still closing. I am four weeks past her surgery and its as if it never happened. I think its harder on us then it is on them! The baby onesies are a great idea, I got preemie ones from kids R us and actually cut pee pee and poopy holes so she could 'go' but not get at her incision. Plus she looked extra cute in the onesie! Remember the procedure is only about 45 minutes and make sure the vet calls you right after and lets you know what time they plan on putting her under. You should feel comfortable to call as much as you need, or even stay there. I called no less then 7 times!! Keep in touch with us and let us know how it goes, your baby is gorgeous btw!

| I had my baby spayed 4mths ago and was a nervous wreck before/during/after the procedure....she was 11 mths old at the time and 5.5 lbs.......everything went quite well and the folks here on YT were more than supportive.......I brought my baby home the same night and although she was extremely groggy she did fine....all she wanted to do was just sleep....she had staples put in as my vet felt that they were more sturdier than regular stitches as she does like to jump alot....She came home with a collar, but I also had a couple onesies for her to wear in which I cut out a circle for her tail so that she could do her business....She has always been on a regular schedule so in the morning/evening I would just unsnap the onesies for her to go potty. She was a real trooper and came through with flying colors....Now a few months later you'd never know it was even done....Sending you well wishes and good luck for you baby....let us know how it all goes...

| When I got Nadia done it was a CHORE to keep her slowed down for the requested time frame. She is a HUGE baby too so I was very suprised. She was already wanting to run around when I went to get her that PM. They let me bring her home that day too..some vets wont let you. Good luck with your baby!
