| Sick and Tired of Carsick Yorkie!!! My sumo wrestler LOL rescue Yorkie that I have had for 1 year this month and who is five, almost six years old, gets VERY, VERY CARSICK. Since I have three dogs (another Yorkie and now a rescue Shih-tzu) and since I travel, organizing them in the car really takes a PH.D. I have tried organic ginger root, benadry, dramamine, not feeding him for 12 hours previous to a trip, leaving windows open, stopping so often on a trip that it is maddening and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING SEEMS TO HELP MY LITTLE/BIG (10 LBS), BUDDY BOY. I have stopped short of using a trank like apromazine (sp?) because I absolutely despise using meds when something natural might and could work. But nothing has. Now my question: Has anyone ever heard of a dog who gets violently sick in the back seat but NOT THE FRONT SEAT OF A VEHICLE? I have never let Buddy ride in the front since that is Dixie Cup's special seat, but yesterday I took him for a short trip and decided to try the front seat on the way to the groomer. For the first time, he did not vomit. It could have been luck but I am wondering. I certainly, desperately would love your input(s)/feedback(s). This Dog is the world's sweetest and nicest in every way. I cannot find a single chink in his armor --LOL--EXCEPT this awful carsickness. I am so dog savvy and into natural feedings, holistic vets etc. but this problem is really nasty and I need him to stop vomiting in my car. I have the other two dogs so I have to keep them a bit separated etc. or eveyone willl step in it, possibly eat it etc. HELP IF YOU CAN OR ARE SO MOTIVATED. Thanks a lot to all of you. | Not a dog but as a child i used to be terribly car sick, i would be ill even if i was just sitting in the car/bus before the journey started, i was always a lot better in the front seat than at the back seat. I have grown out of it but a couple times as an adult i felt ill while in the back seat. Not a lot of help i guess? Last edited by sullysmum; 05-15-2008 at 08:45 AM. |

| our girls love to GO!! but poor big ole Daisy (almost 10 lbs) is the only one who gets carsick,, she does MUCH better in our trucks,, than the car,, but she'll still drool like a mad dog and then get SICK SICK!!! several times i've caught dog vomit in my HAND rather than let it hit my interior!!! GROSS!!! but,, we've since put her on Cerenia (RX for carsickness),, its fairly new,, and works AMAZINGLY well,, Daisy now LOVES to GO!!! where Pre-Cerenia,, she hated walking toward the car or truck,, poor baby as she knew it was going to make her sick,, we tried all kinds of natural remedies, nothing worked,, but Cerenia is TERRIFIC!! we got the recommendation from our vet,, tried it and were amazed our first trip!! i give her one pill ,, 30 minutes before we leave out,, and she is fine,, enjoys riding now!!! can eat and drink if she needs to and still doesnt get sick! but I will tell you, we then got a written RX from the vet and sent it in to Drs Fosters & Smith,, cost less than half there of what it did thru the vets office,,,, is worth EVERY PENNY to us,, our trip is enjoyable for Daisy and for us now!!

| I don't know what kind of doggie car seat you use, but it REALLY helps to have them UP HIGH so they can see out the windows.

| Buddy's car sickness!! First of all, THANK YOU ALL for your suggestions. I am going to speak to my vet about Cerenia as she once gave me a trank (started with an "A" and said it would take the edge off only--my neighbor used it and her dog was zonked for hours)but I never used it because I simply could not bring myself to use medication. Consequently, he still barfed all the way to New England (five hour trip) and on every subsequent trip. Yup, I travel in retirement and Buddy's car sickness is really disturbing not to mention miserable for him. I am going to buy a lookout seat for him rather than let him sit on the pillow I have in the back. Maybe sitting up higher will work. I want him in the front but darn it, that is where my dominant little Bitch <G> has always sat and when I tried her in the BACK and put Buddy in the front, she went nuts. I felt awful. She has been with me since day one (five years) and Buddy and Henry are rescues. I have had Buddy for one year this month. And so, I am hoping that getting him elevated will help. I know sitting in the front helps cause he gets maximum AC and can see our the window. I am so frustrated by this wonderful dog's car distress. You would never know it when I say "ride"--he immediately perks up and cannot wait to get into the car. He absolutely loves to 'go"...go figure. Any other suggestions are totally welcomed. I just pray to god that he will be able to ride in the back seat as my little Dixie is not having anything to do with being moved. The front seat is hers and trust me she lets you know it. Thanks again everyone, YorkieSue |

| I have used Cerenia on my little Jersey - normally he can't even go to the store without throwing up. Cerenia was great. He rode for over two hours and didn't have any problems. He wasn't sleepy either. The front seat makes perfect sense - there is less side to side movement up there than in the back. Also they can see the horizon, which helps keep them steadier, so less motion. My vet highly recommends Cerenia, it is related to the drugs they give cancer patients for nausea. Good luck. It's no fun for either of you when he is sick all the time.

| as for our Daisy, front seat made NO difference to her, ,nor did up high a car seat where she could see out,, or me holding her on my shoulder up high,, only the Cerenia works,, with NO side effects,, only thing,, its not to be given over 5 days running,,,which is fine for us,, our trips are generally weekend trips,, so she gets one Friday, one late Sunday and generally a 4 hr ride,, BTW,, our vet also told me i could try BONINE (human car sick medicine you buy over the counter) not Dramine,, but BONINE,, does not make them sleepy, and for her he said try half a tablet,, but she is near 10 lbs i've tried it on short trips like to the vet, etc,, and it kept her from throwing up but she did get "drooly" which she doesnt do with the Cerenia,, i'm guessing its not as strong or works some differently,, but both are just to stop the throwing up reflex in them,, best of luck!!

| Cerenia Thanks to you all for this suggestion. I take Buddy to my vet next week for his annual and for titering so I will ask her about this at this time. I just read about it on: Cerenia and it sounds wonderful. Sounds like something wonderful. Does anyone know if one dose lasts for two days? How long do the effects of the pill last? Thanks again, YorkieSue |
