Default Am I the only one?

Im so annoyed with dog food. It seems like there a problem with EVERY food out there. Bad ingrediants, poor manufacturing, inabilty to find it, outrageously priced , or you have allergies ,sensativties, or straight up refusal to eat it. When I was a kid my folks feed the dog whatever they found on sale and all was good(that we knew). Is anyone else burned out?

I'm definitely ANNOYED!!!!! We've tried over 5 different foods, and have kept switching because either Xavier didn't like them or because we found out the "BAD" things about the company! Luckily, Nature's Variety seems to be doing great and X loves it! I think we've finally found a keeper! You know YorkieTalk should make its own "HOLISTIC, ORGANIC, HOMECOOKED, RAW" food. lol. Ok so I know thats not even possible....but still...

I know. It's ridiculous. Everyone says you have to do the research yourself and pick the best brands based on the ingredients, but why the heck isn't there a source you can trust so everyone who owns a dog doesn't have to do all the research themselves? We can't even trust vets, for criminy sakes.

I am conpletely burned out by it!! I have decided my final decision is going to have to be based on availability just because I don't want to deal with ordering. Luckily JRG is a great local place (about 90 minutes away) with lots of variety and always trying new brands, they have even started carrying the raw foods lately, along with mostly 4,5, and 6 star foods.
Now 90 minutes might now sound local to some of you but in Northwest Iowa we generally go that far to go shopping anyway, plus we have to go there every 6 weeks for the my daughter to go to the orthodontist.

Uh, yes! I am in dog food hell right now.

Brylie came to me eating Costco crap.....

I put her on Eagle Pack which lasted 4 days and she wouldn't eat it....

I swtiched her to Performatrin Ultra....all good but has menodine in it and she was eating fine but decided 2 days ago to not want it badly.

Started having to give her a bit of Wellness canned to get her to fill her belly at least once a day while I figure out what the heck to do....

Now I am waiting for Wellness to send me some samples so I can see if she likes it....

Still wondering if Orijen is the way to go and if I want to drive that far to get it.

Like I said. Dog food hell. Never mind the fact that almost every brand has some issue or bad ingredient or fillers or meat not meal or grains...you get my point.

This food deal is hard. If I didn't have a husband, 3 kids, a job. another dog and 3 cats....I'd cook for her. But I ain't willing to do that so I NEED the best kibble and canned stuff.

So frustrating.

Great post. Thanks for the platform to rant and vent.

Yes I'm burned out as well. I've done research and more research. Seem to worry about it all the time. Even with the so called "good" companies. Damn the PFI. I need to keep it nice but I think you all know what I mean.

AND.....

Son of a Gun....

So I get samples of Wellness and Orijen. I put a little of each down right next to each other. She picks out all the Orijen pieces and starts gobblin' them up. So I take whats left of the two kinds and shuffle them together. STILL she picks out the Orijen and leaves the Wellness behind.

I need more input on the Orijen though. For whatever reason it seems odd to me that they have such a higher protein percentage than all the other "premiium" puppy foods. Help!

Where are you seeing that it's higher? It's pretty much the same protein % of those in its class (42-44%) - it's a great food. They have a staff nutritionist at Orijen - perhaps you should call them. I've emailed with their nutritionist and have had a great response. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong w/ Orijen - as I said on your other thread about Orijen. Great food, great company, great staff. Love 'em! BUT, do I EVER know how you feel.

I hear you. My hubby's job takes up a lot of hours a week, plus my full time job, plus two kids, three farms cats, 2Brittney Spaniels (one is 10 and the other is almost 2) and Buddy Boy. Plus I hate to cook, my husband usually does it for the family and I don't think I can talk him into doing it for the dog too.

YES!!!!!

I was going to feed my new puppy Solid Gold.
Then I found out that "Solid Gold Dry dog foods are made at the Diamond Pet Foods processing plant."
Solid Gold (pet food - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) WHAT?!!! Diamond was in the food recall mess!
Also that Solid Gold said on their web site "that we have had to make the difficult decision to replace the salmon in our Barking at the Moon, WolfKing, WolfCub, and Just a Wee Bit dry dog food formulas with menhaden herring, labeled as “ocean fish”." If they can label it as "ocean fish" who knows what they can put in under that name at a later date without informing the consumer. News and Announcements
Solid Gold bit the dust!

Then I wanted to feed Canidae. The vet says that is good but if the dog has allergies we will not be able to tell easily to what because there are 4 protein sources.

Now I am feeding California Natural Lamb and Rice. One protein, one fat, and one carbohydrate source!
WHEW!

Who knew deciding what to feed a puppy would be so hard?

If I look at theirs it says 42 percent. Wellness says 28 percent. Eagle Pack says 28 percent.......

Well, I think what I'm getting at is those are sort of in different "classes" - it's kind of like comparing apples to oranges. Are you comparing grain-free to grain-free or just a food to a food? What I was saying is that if you look at Orijen within its class (grain free, higher protein), it is comparable to those within its class. It might be helpful if you chose which direction feels right for you and your pup - as in, grain free, regular, raw, kibble, canned or ?

I know you've mentioned the allergy issues a lot, so, if it were me - I'd probably go grain free or raw. Or, choose one of the allergy foods - but then you may actually sacrifice protein, so that's something to keep in mind as well. Again, I'm comfortable with high protein - so I'd go the first route - but you have to do what you're comfortable with.

I love you, lol. I don't know you...but I love you. (oh, I think you think I'm a guy...I saw that in a post somewhere...nope, girl...married to a great hubby with 3 beautiful kids). I heart you cause you are informative and smart. THanks so much for all your help and input. I really appreciate it.

I just came from the vet with my pup...she had her booster shot. I brought a sample bag of Orijen along for him to look at. He had never heard of it either. He LOVES the product and even told me to hold off on spending my money on Omega 3-6-9 cause he thinks this Orijen should be wonderful for her skin and coat all on it's own. (This coming from a vet who sells products in his clinic and he NEVER sways me into his stuff....I love him). Anyhoo...he was really impressed and not concerned about the high protein.

BTW....Brylie (pup) is now 2.7 pounds at 3 months. She was 1.94 pounds at 8 weeks...a month ago. Is it normal in the world of Yorkies for less than a pound weight gain in a whole month??? He didn't seem concerned about it...just thought she would end up being a little under the pound mark full grown. THoughts?

LOL....I hear ya. Although...only Natures Balance I think it's called sent me something so far and it was only a dollar off coupon! No samples or anything. I think I may do the Orijen thing. Wylies' mom, a few others and now my vet seem to think it's a wonderful choice. Good luck and post when you know what your going with!!!
