| Need Advice Re: Teeth Cleaning/Pulling (Long...sorry) So.....I am in another predicament with Kiwi...ugh I tell you what, this little girl causes me more trouble! But I love her so much, so I don't care. Here's the latest issue with her: her teeth! She is an approx. 7 y/o RESCUE, with many, many health issues, some of which include seizures (on phenobarb. for that), serious separation anxiety, liver issues, kidney issues, and some other things. But she is just a little sweetie...total opposite of Kobi (the yorkshire TERROR). Okay, so you got a little background..now... Since she is a rescue, she had horrible teeth when they took her in, and so she got nearly all pulled (all front and some in the back). I estimate now she has about 6-8 teeth...I can't count for sure, but regardless, she doesn't chew anything. She swallows her food whole (no teeth to chew), and she is WAY WAY above playing with toys or chewing on chews or treats or anything.... She sits on her "perch" all day and sleeps most of the time. So here's the issue...her teeth are horrible already with tartar and lots of build-up. My opinion is, why can't I just pull the rest of them? She never uses them. But the vet tech wants to clean them and then get me to start brushing. Okay, fine and dandy if you don't know her personality, but I do, and if you think she's going to sit there and deal with me brushing her teeth, YOU'RE WRONG! lol She is silly as heck, and would never allow that. So she just had them cleaned in October (6 mos or so ago) and the already need to be cleaned. The vet wants between $260-290 to clean them ! If you were in my position, what would you do? Trust me, I want HONEST opinions. Please don't be mean, but if you think it's mean to pull them, LET ME KNOW! I won't be upset or in any way offended...that is why I'm asking. Sorry this got so long But I really appreciate any help...

| Off topic: Are the seizures from the liver problem? I have NO IDEA what I would do. That is a hard call. Ellie had her front teeth pulled but she has plenty left and I do brush them. If you are absolutely certain that you can't brush, then you might consider pulling them. That would probably be a last resort for me though. I have no problem holding dogs down to brush. Is she eating kibble or canned?

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I can not imagine anyone being mean to you. It was awesome you took in a rescue with so many problems. I think I would feel the same way as you do. I don't like the idea of pulling teeth but in the case of your baby what else can you do? The cost to have them cleaned every six months not to mention the fact they need to be put under to do it would make me think pulling them is the only answer. I wouldn't want to risk having my dogs put under every six months as there could be problems. I also know how it is to have one that will not allow you to brush their teeth. I have teddy and I have brushed his teeth since I got him at 10 wks old. He fights it more and more all the time. He will soon be three and I only brush his teeth once a month as he gets so upset. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

I'm not absolutely certain that I can't brush, I guess, but I know she'll hate it, and to me it seems sorta crazy to put her through that...she's a VERY scared dog about things...just can't explain her... She is on kibble---canidae. Since you asked, that just got me to thinking, I wonder if she would chew raw bones since they seem much more enticing to other dogs ??? Hmm...maybe I ought to try that.... Thank you for your advice

| Why not try Petzlife first? Use the gel and just apply with your finger tip on the teeth. It's guaranteed to remove plagh and tarter. It really does work. Lot's cheaper than removing her remaing teeth. If they are not infected or causing her problems why not try to save them first. www.Petzlife.com |

I agree too...is it worth risking her life every 6 months to get her teeth cleaned that she doesn't use ?? This is precisely why I'm in this dilemna....

I wouldn't give kibble to her at all. Canned food would be so much healthier. She won't have to swallow it whole and it is good for the liver anyway. I think it is entirely possible that she is seizing because of her liver. It could very possibly be a shunt or MVD. She needs to be bile acid tested. If it is an extrahepatic shunt, they could try to repair it. If it is intrahepatic or MVD, she could go on supplements and a different diet and maybe even feel tons better.

Thank you for that advice! I think I will try it BEFORE even having them cleaned this time for like a month and see what it does!

| Hi Terri, am sure whatever the decision you come up it, it is because it works out for you and your darling Kiwi . . . You are an amazing person for taking her into your life . . .and am sure she has brought nothing but LOVE and adoration for her Mommy . . . Tiger just went through teeth cleaning and it is no fun to worry . . . . with Kiwi, that might be more frequent (should you decide to do the teeth cleaning) and there is always that danger of them not ever waking up Have you tried petzlife? They are either sprayed or it comes in a gel . . .I bought both for my babies but the reality is I keep forgetting to use it on them . . . but maybe someone here can comment on if they are effective as a replacement to brushing their teeth. |

I swear by it! It truly works. Tartar gone! It comes in gel or spray. I said gel because some pups are afraid of the shhhhhhh sound that the spray makes. Gel is easier to use. It can be purchased at most pet stores as well but you can read about it on their site and see how it does work. HOpe that helps your baby. | |

Okay...soo....I am spoiled and have all my babies free-feeding Canidae...so how do I make that switch and do mealtimes? Also, what canned food should I feed? You really think she has LS or MVD at 7 y/o and she has lived this long with it? I'm not trying to question you...I know you are very intelligent...but I guess I didn't realize that happened ?? Oh, this dog confuses me sooooooo much! Please help!!!!!
