| Bleeding from Stool -- ): Hello Everyone, I wonder if your dogs experienced bleeding from his/her stool. If yes. Can you please let me know what heppened? and how did you solve the problem? Here's my Sparky experienced, he had bleeding in his stool at 7pm on Mar. 12, and we were so scared and took him to the emergency hospital. At that time, Sparky already stopped bleeding. Vet did his temprature test, it was normal. Then she said that we have to leave him there for the night for the tests, then she asked us to pay $1600. We called at the same night, nurse said that Sparky is stable. Then we called again in the morning of 13th, they said Sparky was fine, and he was playing. However, they won't let us to take him home until further observation. This morning, we called again, vet said that we can pick Sparky up tonight. Then she asked for $2500 in total. I was shocked for this charge, and I didn't know what exactly they did. More ridiculours thing is when I asked her what caused this bleeding as I knew that he didn't pick up anything or ate anything wrong. She said that she's not sure. From all the tests results, everything was fine. Can you believe this? My friends told me $25oo is way too much money for this treatment. It's not like surgery. Do you think that this Vet rip me off? Do you know where I can go to complain about vets? Thanks, S.S. |

| I am glad that you have your baby back and he is better but WOW $2500 and you still don't know what is wrong. I have no idea who to file a complaint with but I do know emergency vets usually charge lots more than regular vet.

| I can't imagine what they could have done to charge that much. There are many things that can cause bloody stool. If a dog eats something that can irritate the intestinal lining then that will cause bloody stools. If they get a bacterial infection in their stomach then that can cause bloody stools. I just hope your baby will be okay. |

| Wow- that is an obscene amount of money for that. My Diggs had the same issue a couple of days ago and I brought him to the Vet in the morning and picked him up later in the afternoon. They did all the necessary tests, x-rays, blood work, stool/fecal and I guess he had some sort of bacteria in his tummy. Anyways- the total for all those procedures was $350 including a new diet for him (a few cans) and some medication. I think you need to call them and find out exactly what they did because that is WAY too much... although I have always said I would pay anything to keep my Diggs healthy. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | That sounds like they really took advantage of you. I just had Cali at the er vet for eating a latex toy that caused stomach problems it only cost 280.00. They took Xrays/ They did say I could leave her all night for observation, which I declined as I can watch her and bring her back if needed. Then she had bloody stool a week later took her to regulat vet they did a fecal test (40.00) and gave gave her medicine (5.00) so I think they really overcharged. My Pom has bloody stool unless she is on meds every day then she is fine, I would try and talk to the office manager at the vets or owner and file a complaint. I am glad your baby is better.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | That sounds outrageous - and I have a dog who had terrible digestive problems as a pup (that were continuously unsolved). What does the itemized bill say? Wow.

YT 2000 Club Member | I'd go in and ask them to show you a paper stating what all they did to him and costs for each and every thing. I'm sorry but I think it's rediculous what emergency vets charge!! A few years back we had an emergency with my cat Justice, she had symptoms starting on Saturday night and our vet was closed and wouldn't be back open until Monday morning. Throughout the night she got worse and I did all I could do and in between carring for her I got online and started researching, turned out she had pyometra (sp). I was so scared to death we were going to lose her because she had gone downhill so fast. I called the ER vet and told them her symptoms and I thought she may have pyometra, they said to bring her in, but I had to know the cost of what it would be to make sure I had enough. They said, just to check her and do all the testing to diagnose pyo, it would be $1200.00, I was FLOORED!! No way did I have that kind of money laying around, but if I did, I would have spent it on her in a heartbeat! I only had $500 and they wouldn't hold a check for a week and they wouldn't except a partial payment and let me pay the rest when my hubby got his paycheck. They had me apply for a credit card over the phone with them but then refused me because I have "no credit" established. Well duh, we've always paid stuff with cash. Oh, and I forgot to mention, if it was indeed pyo and they did surgery, the cost of the surgery and meds and overnight stay was not included in the $1200.00 I sat up with Justice all night and cried and prayed and pushed fluids through a syringe. Saturday morning came and I called my sister who in turn called her vet at home who was nice enough to tell me to give Justice human antibiotics I had at home (adjusted for her weight) I didn't even think twice, I mean, I had to try something, she was so close to death. Long story short, it worked, it kept her hanging on until Monday morning when I showed up at my vets at 7 in the AM, I had stopped pushing fluids (and she was not eating from being so sick) at 12 Saturday night and he immediately took her from me ad we went into the examining room. He checked her and sure enough, she had pyometra. Her did surgery on her that morning and for the cost of the surgery, all the meds, her staying over night and meds to take home, it was $180.00 THAT'S IT!! And the ER vet wanted to charge me $1200.00 just to check her and run some tests, quite a difference hu!

| I tell people to stay away from the ER vets, as they have a license to hold you up. Your regular vet is much better. I know that there are times that it isn't possible to have your regular vet. As I live in a farming community, our vets are on 24 hour call. They know us and work with us through out the year, so an emergency call isn't that much more expensive than regular hours. That vet really did a job on you. I would check into it with a fine tooth comb. There is no reason for that care to have cost so much. Most times bloody stool is Cocci, which a sulfa drug will stop, or by eating what they shouldn't. I feel for you ,as there is no way that I could afford that kind of vet bill. To me that is above and beyond reasonable charges. |

| I took a maltese puppy in to the vet(emergency) on Christmas morning 5 years ago(she had hypoglycemia, which at the time, I didn't know much about)..we were there 3-4 hours, total vet bill for everything they did was $125....sounds to me, like that vet needs money pretty bad..that's ridiculous to charge that much! My daughter had to take her dog in a few mos. ago to the vet because he was also bleeding..I don't recall what the problem was, the vet said this does happen sometimes, he gave him a shot, and it cost my daughter $45 and it cleared up.. |

| Over the years I have discovered that occasionally, no matter how careful we are, our dogs or puppies will sometimes get bloody diarrhea. If I have a dog with bloody diarrhea I give them some Diarsanyl that I get from Revival Animal Health. Diarsanyl is a oral paste nutritional supplement used as an aid in coating the intestinal mucosa. It works great if your dog has a intestinal bacterial infection. In most cases after one or two applications the diarrhea and bloody stool is gone. I don't change their diet or give them any special food. Usually they won't want to eat much anyway. I have never had a dog that did not clear up within 12 to 24 hours. Now if it is a puppy with diarrhea I use Albon. Any dog with bloody diarrhea needs immediate attention and this is why I alway keep these products on hand. If possible you need to know why your dog got sick but sometimes it is difficult to figure it out. Dogs that go outside are more likely to eat something that could cause intestinal upsets. You should always keep fresh water, change the water at least once a day. Keep your food fresh, once I open a bag of food it is gone within a week. Watch what treats you give your dogs, bully sticks and other treats are know to harbor bacteria. Sometime you will need to see a vet like the case where the dog ate a penny or if your dog gets a blockage but the majority of the cases of bloody diarrhea can simply be treated at home. Prevention is the best medicine. |

| I think you got beat. Tricksie has been in three times with blood in her stool and they did a sample, the next two times I took a sample in. They did blood tests and gave her fluids and antobiotics, it was a bacterial infection....$80 a visit.
